Arne Slot sack update: Fabrizio Romano clarifies Liverpool’s stance

Fabrizio Romano has come out to offer Liverpool’s stance on Arne Slot being their long-term manager from the Anfield dug-out, after the Reds had to settle for a disappointing 1-1 draw with Chelsea in the Premier League on Saturday lunchtime.

When Ryan Gravenberch curled home an early opener against the Blues, who hadn’t won across their last six Premier League contests before coming to Anfield, the expectant home masses must have been hopeful of a convincing win for their beloved side.

Instead, throw in a couple of missed chances and some poor defending from a free-kick, and Calum McFarlane’s Chelsea managed to collect a share of the points in an unsatisfactory 1-1 draw, which leaves Arne Slot‘s men still not secure in their Champions League status for next season.

It makes an away showdown with Aston Villa that much tougher this coming Friday night, with a win needed to officially secure their spot around that exclusive European table for another campaign.

Ultimately, it does look as if Slot and Co. will participate in the Champions League, unless two horrible losses are served up on the road to Unai Emery’s hosts, and back on home soil versus Brentford.

Yet, with the Dutchman clinching the Premier League title during his debut season in charge, this still feels like an underwhelming conclusion, with several Liverpool fans frustrated at the final whistle of the Chelsea draw, as heard in the boos reverberating around Anfield.

Despite calls for Slot’s head at the full-time whistle, as the Dutchman cut a frustrated figure at the full-time whistle, it does appear as if the ex-Feyenoord head coach remains Liverpool’s chosen man from the dug-out for next season, with Fabrizio Romano offering some clarity on the head coach situation recently.

Romano’s update on Slot

Speaking via his YouTube channel, the transfer expert has offered this clear take on the future of Slot at Anfield.

Romano stated: “At the moment, the feeling at Liverpool, I can confirm that it is absolutely in the direction that they want to continue with Slot.

“Why? Because so far, and it’s May now, it’s no longer February, March, or April. In May, Liverpool have not made contact with any other manager.

“There were many rumours on Liverpool making contact with Alonso coming from Germany, but I can guarantee that Liverpool this year never made any direct approach with Alonso or with his agents.”

It sounds as if the Reds have just been patient with Slot, and he arguably deserves some grace, considering his explosive debut season on Merseyside.

Yet, with May now on the calendar, it will be intriguing to see if the Liverpool hierarchy has any different end-of-season plans to tap up a new head coach, with Xabi Alonso still available, despite Romano’s assertions that his ex-club has never contacted him.

This will all surely rest on how Liverpool bow out from the challenging 2025/26 season, which still has two games left.

Will this situation change?

If the reigning Premier League champions were to lose their last two games of the top-flight season, Slot’s future would surely be put under the microscope with more scrutiny.

Even if he were to clinch Champions League football, the boos that rang out all around Anfield at the close of the Blues draw will surely have perked the ears of the Fenway Sports Group into realising that the Dutch head coach isn’t the most popular figure currently.

For the time being, though, the message does seem to be loud and clear that Slot will remain in the dug-out, heading into next season, but he will need to show some significant signs of improvement soon, or he will surely be on the chopping block down the line.
