West Ham United Women return to Barclays Women’s Super League action this weekend as they welcome Manchester City Women to the Chigwell Construction Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Kick-off in East London is scheduled for 1pm BST, with the Hammers looking to end the campaign on a positive note against the newly crowned WSL champions.
Rehanne Skinner’s side face one of the toughest tests in the division against a Manchester City team that has once again showcased its quality throughout the season. However, West Ham will be hoping home support and a resilient defensive display can help them produce a strong performance in front of the Claret and Blue faithful.
Despite the challenge ahead, there have been plenty of positives for the Hammers throughout the campaign. Strong performances against several top sides, combined with noticeable progression under Skinner, have highlighted the development within the squad over the course of the season.
Manchester City arrive in East London boasting one of the most dangerous attacking units in the Women’s Super League. With players such as Lauren Hemp, Chloe Kelly and Khadija Shaw capable of changing games in an instant, Gareth Taylor’s side have consistently demonstrated why they remain among the elite teams in English football.
City’s movement in possession, attacking fluidity and ability to dominate territory make them difficult opponents for any side in the division. Their title-winning campaign has been built on consistency, defensive solidity and clinical finishing in key moments.
For West Ham, discipline and organisation will likely prove crucial. The Hammers have shown throughout the season that they are capable of frustrating top opposition when remaining compact and aggressive out of possession, while also posing threats on the counterattack through pace and direct attacking play.
Much of the focus could once again fall on captain Katrina Gorry, whose leadership and intensity in midfield continue to be central to West Ham’s performances. The Australian international’s experience and ability to disrupt opposition attacks will be vital against City’s technically gifted midfield unit.
Elsewhere, the Hammers will look towards attacking players such as Viviane Asseyi and Shekiera Martinez to provide moments of quality in the final third. Both have shown flashes of brilliance throughout the season and could prove important if West Ham are to trouble the visitors.
Speaking ahead of the fixture, Skinner acknowledged the quality of the opposition while insisting her side will approach the game with confidence and determination.
“Manchester City are a top-quality side with threats all over the pitch, but these are the matches you want to be involved in. We need to remain disciplined, work hard for each other and take our opportunities when they come.”
Previous meetings between the two sides have often produced entertaining contests, with Manchester City’s attacking strength regularly tested by West Ham’s determination and defensive resilience. City claimed victory in the earlier meetings between the clubs this season, but the Hammers will be eager to make home advantage count this weekend.
With the final stages of the season approaching, West Ham will be aiming to deliver one final strong performance for supporters at the Chigwell Construction Stadium and continue building momentum heading into the summer.
