The Los Angeles Rams have already acquired two cornerbacks this offseason, but could adding former Indianapolis Colts star Kenny Moore II help?
The Rams traded for Trent McDuffie and signed Jaylen Watson this offseason. The two cornerbacks, both of whom are former Kansas City Chiefs, now belong to one of the NFL’s best defenses. Even with McDuffie and Watson, the Rams still need as much talent as possible to win the Super Bowl. After drafting Ty Simpson in the first round, the Rams should focus on acquiring as much ready talent as possible.
Should Los Angeles Rams Sign Kenny Moore?
NFL veteran Kenny Moore is a great potential addition to the team. Undrafted in 2017, Moore has since become one of the best cornerbacks in the league. Moore has been a shutdown cornerback with great instincts and the ability to do almost anything on the field.
He remains a premier cornerback who can become the No. 1 option for many teams. Even though the Rams have McDuffie and Watson, Moore could make their secondary an elite unit. Moore spent his entire NFL career with the Indianapolis Colts after going undrafted out of Valdosta State. He was in the last year of his three-year, $30 million contract, but he asked to become a free agent after Indianapolis had no desire to extend him.
Although Moore has been selected to just one Pro Bowl, his level of play far exceeds his awards. He has 21 career interceptions, 11.5 sacks and 649 tackles.
Moore was in trade rumors in April and answered with a lackluster response.
“It’s all good. It’s all love,” Moore reportedly told ESPN’s Stephen Holder, per Paul Bretl.
Things fell apart between Moore and the Colts one month later, as the Colts officially released him on May 7 and made him a free agent with training camp looming.
Kenny Moore is a nine-year veteran who can do it all. He has the ability to cover the slot, excels in open field tackling and thrives on being versatile. The Rams could utilize him in a variety of roles, as Moore can fill any role needed to strengthen the defense and play effectively in multiple defensive schemes.
Why Moore Makes Sense for Rams to Add Ahead of OTAs
The Rams have already improved their cornerback unit after a lackluster group last year. The team has solidified the defensive roster but Moore could make their pass defense impenetrable.
Since he is a free agent, general manager Les Snead won’t have to use Rams Draft picks to acquire him. However, Moore is a talented defensive back who may request a big contract. Moore has already made more than $57 million in his career and could be looking for a big payday. However, Moore may have to sacrifice some potential earnings with training camp approximately two months away. The Rams have just under $28 million in available cap space to work with so Moore’s contract shouldn’t be a problem.
The Rams could also sign Kenny Moore on a one-year contract if he wants to earn a bigger payday before potentially testing the market for one last multi-year deal in his career. Sometimes the market determines a player’s future, and if Moore doesn’t receive an offer he likes, he could settle for a one-year a deal. In that case, Moore would be the perfect signing. The Rams would only need to use a portion of their cap space to make their secondary as strong as their offense.
