Defender’s Everton future in doubt as Rangers return on cards

Nathan Patterson has played just 7 games this season for Everton

The defender is not expected to sign a new deal

Patterson has previously voiced his hope for more minutes at Everton

Nathan Patterson arrived at Everton from Rangers in January 2022 for a fee of £11m. The Scotland international was seen as a long‑term successor to Seamus Coleman at right‑back. However, injuries and limited opportunities have prevented him from living up to expectations.

Now, with his contract expiring next summer and no new deal seemingly on the horizon, his future at Hill Dickinson Stadium looks uncertain.

Nathan Patterson has made just seven appearances this season, with only three starts, playing 266 minutes. He has struggled to break into David Moyes’ plans, with Jake O’Brien and James Garner often preferred at right‑back over him. The 23‑year‑old has previously spoken about his frustration, but a summer exit now appears increasingly likely.

Dickov: ‘A move back to Rangers would be good for him’

Former Scotland international Paul Dickov has recommended a return to Glasgow for Patterson. Speaking to Record Sport, Dickov said: “Nathan Patterson is at the age where you have to be playing football. He’s had some unfortunate injuries, but now that he’s back, he needs game time. There’s no doubting his ability, he’s a top young defender, and a move back to Rangers would be good for him.

“If he’s available, I’m sure there’ll be plenty of clubs interested in him. But I think a move back to Rangers, where he’s comfortable and in surroundings he knows, could reignite his career.”

Rangers captain James Tavernier is set to leave when the season ends, opening up a spot at right‑back. A return to Ibrox would offer Patterson regular first‑team football, something Everton cannot guarantee.

Nathan Patterson on his situation at Everton

Back in March, Patterson addressed his lack of minutes. “I know I’m fully fit and ready to play. Hopefully I can get some minutes. Obviously, you want to play as much as you can but it’s not really up to me, I can only do what I can on the pitch. That’s a discussion for myself and the manager to have [on his future].”

Since then, little has changed. Patterson remains on the sidelines. With European football difficult but still a possibility for Everton, Moyes may want squad depth, but Patterson seems unlikely to sign a new deal. A summer departure makes sense for all parties.

Everton paid £11m for Patterson, but his value has diminished. A return to Rangers this summer could give him the fresh start he needs. As Dickov said, he is at the age where he must be playing. That will not happen at Everton. A move back to Rangers could be the answer.
