The New York Jets signed an undrafted free-agent kicker following the 2026 NFL Draft and the team has already seen enough of him.
On May 8, the Jets signed a total of 12 undrafted free agents, including BYU kicker Will Ferrin, who went on to take part in the team’s rookie minicamp from May 8-10.

However, just six days after signing with Gang Green, Ferrin is on his way out.
According to the New York Post’s Brian Costello, the Jets are waiving Ferrin on Wednesday.
“The Jets are cutting rookie kicker Will Ferrin, according to a source,” Costello said. “He was a UDFA signing from BYU. This clears a roster spot for Tim Patrick. They still have kickers Cade York and Lenny Krieg on the roster.”

Ferrin was one of three kickers competing for the starting job in New York, along with Cade York and Lenny Krieg.
The Athletic’s Zack Rosenblatt adds that Ferrin wasn’t having a ton of success with his opportunities in practice, which is likely what led to him getting the boot.

“Wow, Will Ferrin already released. He did miss a couple FGs at the rookie camp practice we saw him kicking at — but I thought he’d at least get a shot to compete for the job,” Rosenblatt said.
Ferrin was BYU’s kicker for three years. He tallied a field goal success rate of 81.7% and made 122 of his 123 extra points in that span.
Now, he’ll try to find a new home in the NFL.
Jets’ kicker competition
Cincinnati Bengals place kicker Cade York (3) walks for the locker room after the fourth quarter of the NFL Week 18 game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Cincinnati Bengals at Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh on Saturday, Jan. 4, 2025. The Bengals won 19-17 to finish the regular season at 9-8.
While nothing else has gone right for the New York Jets in recent years, they were at least able to rely on their kicker.
New York signed veteran Nick Folk last offseason and he was excellent, making 28-of-29 field goals, including an impressive seven from 50 yards out.
However, Folk moved on to greener pastures in 2026, signing a free-agent deal with the Atlanta Falcons.
That leaves New York in a bind, hence the competition that will now feature Krieg and York, neither of whom are a sure thing.
York has more experience but still only has 23 games under his belt. He was the Cleveland Browns’ starter in 2022 but made just 75% of his field goals that season.
Since then, York has bounced around with different teams and hasn’t taken an NFL snap since 2024, when he played in six games for the Washington Commanders and Cincinnati Bengals and made just 69.2% of his field goal tries.
Krieg, meanwhile, has never taken a snap in the NFL.
The Germany native and former soccer player was signed to a futures deal by the Jets in January after the Falcons released him.
We have a sneaking suspicion the Jets will be making more moves at kicker down the road, but for now this is who they have to work with.
