Why a Stefon Diggs and Washington Commanders pairing could actually happen

Free agent wide receiver Stefon Diggs had a big week. On Tuesday, a Massachusetts jury found him not guilty of felony strangulation and misdemeanor assault and battery charges stemming from an alleged incident at his home. On Wednesday, he was back in public at a charity event in the DMV area, and when a reporter asked him about the Washington Commanders, he did not shut the door.

“I definitely want to shed some light on them, and I might go check them out for a little bit,” Diggs said at the event for his Diggs Deep Foundation, per Dov Kleiman on X. “It’s love, it’s hometown, so you know, it makes sense.”

He added that he has already talked to some Washington players about potentially joining the team. Still, Diggs made clear the primary focus right now is on his charitable work, not contract talks. “Everything else will fall into place,” he said.

Washington still has a genuine need at receiver opposite Terry McLaurin

Diggs grew up in Gaithersburg, Maryland, roughly 30 minutes from Northwest Stadium, according to SI. He attended Our Lady of Good Counsel High School before playing college ball at the University of Maryland, and he has stayed deeply connected to the DMV community even as his career took him to Minnesota, Buffalo, Houston, and most recently New England. That proximity and history make the Commanders a natural conversation, but not actually the only reason.

Scary: Free-agent WR Stefon Diggs says he’s interested in signing with the Commanders.

“Might go check them out for a little bit, you know, just it’s love, it’s hometown, so you know, it makes sense.”

Washington genuinely needs help at receiver. The team went 5-12 in 2025 and enters this offseason still looking for a proven second option to pair alongside Terry McLaurin. A third-round pick, wide receiver Antonio Williams, was added in the draft, and they missed on several free agents. Diggs, despite being 32 years old, caught 85 passes for 1,013 yards and four touchdowns for the New England Patriots last season, helping them reach the Super Bowl.

There are competing interests, though. The Commanders have also been linked to Brandon Aiyuk if San Francisco eventually releases him. The Houston Texans are also in the mix for Diggs, given the rapport he developed with quarterback C.J. Stroud during the eight games they played together in 2024. Washington would be competing for his signature.

I would say timing makes this complicated for the Commanders. Diggs said he is not rushing anything, which means his market could remain open well into the summer.

If Washington passes and Aiyuk never becomes available, they will be heading into training camp with a receiver room that falls well short of what Jayden Daniels needs around him. Diggs, for all the noise surrounding his offseason, remains a legitimate weapon. Whether hometown pull is enough to close a deal remains to be seen.
