Russell Wilson did not need a flashy speech to steal attention at the 2026 Met Gala. The veteran QB walked into the event wearing a “Jesus Is King” shirt paired with a diamond cross chain, instantly creating one of the most talked-about NFL-related moments of the night. In a celebrity environment built around image and luxury, Wilson leaned completely into faith and stayed true to the public identity he has carried throughout his career.
As expected, social media erupted with reactions almost immediately. Supporters praised Wilson for openly representing Christianity on one of fashion’s biggest stages, while critics once again labeled him “corny” and “performative.” That split reaction has followed Wilson for years, especially because of his highly visible marriage to Ciara and his unapologetic approach to discussing faith, family, and masculinity publicly.

Wilson’s appearance came during a major crossroads in his football career. The 37-year-old QB continues to be a free agent after a disastrous 2025 season with the New York Giants that ended up seeing him benched after going 0-3.

Currently, based on the information released yesterday in the New York Post, Wilson has to choose between two vastly different scenarios; either coming back to the NFL or switching careers to TV. According to the report, Wilson paid a visit to the New York Jets, who have been looking for experienced backup quarterbacks for their starter, Geno Smith.
When questioned at the BTIG Charity Day in New York about his future, Wilson admitted that the New York Jets have extended him an offer already.

“Why would he conform and go to that demonic event??? He’s worldly. “
The possible Jets move would create an interesting full-circle moment. Wilson and Smith previously spent three seasons together in the Seattle Seahawks, although Smith was the backup during that period. This time, Wilson would likely enter the QB room behind Smith while serving as an experienced insurance option for New York.
The Jets’ current backup situation remains inexperienced. Bailey Zappe, Brady Cook, and rookie Cade Klubnik have limited NFL experience combined, making Wilson an attractive veteran option despite his age. Reports from ESPN also noted that the Jets consulted Smith regarding possible QB additions, and Smith reportedly spoke highly of Wilson.
Yet, football discussions almost took a backseat to Wilson’s Met Gala statement. The “Jesus Is King” outfit immediately became symbolic of the image he has built for over a decade in the NFL. Wilson has consistently centered his public life around Christianity, whether through interviews, charity work, hospital visits, or social media posts with Ciara and their family.
That public devotion has always divided opinion online. The 37-year-old man is usually ridiculed for being emotionally available and presentable, particularly with regard to his marriage and involvement in the upbringing of his wife’s son from her previous relationship with the rapper Future. On the other hand, his supporters point out that he embodies an ideal masculine representation that is rarely recognized in today’s world of professional sports.
In spite of the endless discussions, Wilson has always remained true to himself. At the Met Gala event, where all participants sought media attention, the seasoned quarterback reaffirmed who he really was.
