Barcelona defender Jules Koundé called up by France to World Cup 2026 as Real Madrid star…

Jules Koundé is the first FC Barcelona player officially confirmed for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. His spot on the plane was made official today, rewarding a massive season under Hansi Flick where he’s racked up 46 appearances.

He will be on the pitch when France open the tournament against Senegal on the 16th of June at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

Across rivalry lines, Real Madrid’s Eduardo Camavinga was the shock omission. Didier Deschamps didn’t mince words about why the midfielder is staying home, explaining that “he comes from a difficult season in which he has played little and has suffered injuries.”

Koundé’s inclusion was never really in doubt. He was a starter in four of the five recent qualifiers and has been a constant presence in the squad through the last World Cup and the past two Euros. He’ll be looking for redemption after the 2022 final loss to Argentina.

France lands in Group I this time. After Senegal, Iraq and Norway will be waiting later in the group stage for les bleus, who remain a favorite to lift the trophy..

The Barça presence in the tournament should expand on Monday, May 18, when Carlo Ancelotti announces the Brazil squad. Raphinha is expected to be on that list. Nine names, including that of Lamine Yamal, were called up for Spain’s preliminary list and the majority should make the final cut.

Other World Cup hopefuls include Ronald Araújo (Uruguay), João Cancelo (Portugal), Marcus Rashford (England), and Frenkie de Jong (Netherlands).
