Baker Mayfield’s career has been defined by the extremes of the NFL for almost all of his career. He has spent entire seasons as the charismatic, emotional leader who resurrected a floundering organization only to spend portions of others having people wonder if he deserves to even start long-term. No matter how he gets there, however, Mayfield survives. Even that is more interesting than the rest of this group of QBs heading into season 3 of Netflix’s “Quarterback.”
The third season of the docuseries returns on July 14th and will feature Jayden Daniels, Cam Ward, Joe Flacco and Mayfield. While all the others will provide high-octane moments and unpredictability at times, few could be more likely to give camera shots of sheer emotion and pure intensity than Mayfield.

Mayfield’s career will be highlighted on Netflix’s docuseries “Quarterback”
There was a time it seriously looked like Mayfield’s career was a lost cause.
After leading the Cleveland Browns to a playoff win and giving relevance to one of the NFL’s most miserable franchises, the Browns traded him away to Deshaun Watson and the drama turned public, chaotic and embarrassing. He started losing reps, injuries piled up, the criticisms became a roar and suddenly he looked more like a guy struggling to get his career back on track than a guy you wanted to build your franchise around.
Part of what makes next season of Netflix so compelling is that fact. While younger players featured in the series had a more straightforward path to the NFL and have not had a lifetime of adversity behind their names, Mayfield has it.
Mayfield found his footing in Tampa Bay
Now, Mayfield’s career feels completely different.
Since joining the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Mayfield has rebuilt both his confidence and reputation around the league. Last season, he again helped keep Tampa Bay competitive in the NFC while producing another strong statistical year. More importantly, he looked comfortable leading an offense again instead of playing like somebody desperately trying to save his job every Sunday afternoon.
That confidence will likely translate well on Netflix.
What can we expect from Mayfield on Netflix’s docuseries Quarterback?
Throughout Mayfield’s career, he has never exactly been robotic in front of cameras. He plays with emotion, speaks with confidence and rarely hides his personality. For a series like Quarterback, that creates natural entertainment because viewers are not just watching games on television. They are watching how players respond to pressure, criticism and expectations behind the scenes. There is usually some level of tension, emotion or unpredictability surrounding Mayfield, which tends to make for very interesting television.
Few NFL quarterbacks have faced the level of criticism, scrutiny and constant public debate that have followed Mayfield’s career.
Will Mayfield be the breakout star of Quarterback?
What is also unique about Mayfield’s career is the constant flux he’s experienced in terms of public opinion over the years. One year he’s overrated. One year later, people are hailing him as one of football’s best comeback stories. The ups and downs have been extreme enough for the folks at Netflix to feast upon.
Right now, Mayfield isn’t the young quarterback trying to legitimize himself. Those days are long past. Now, it’s a question of whether he can continue his upward trend and transition his career into something consistently stable and respected.
If Netflix can capture that equilibrium appropriately, Mayfield would undoubtedly be the breakout star of Netflix’s third season of Quarterback.
