NFL icon Troy Aikman gave his insight about the Kansas City Chiefs’ opening game versus the Denver Broncos by saying it could be one of the most compelling openers of the 2026 NFL season. The Week 1 divisional clash carries significant intrigue as both teams enter the year with high expectations and lingering questions.
The former quarterback pointed to the two teams slugging it out as a fitting way to begin the season, highlighting the importance of opening with a divisional game. He emphasized how early matchups within the division can shape momentum and establish a competitive edge from the outset.

Kansas City enters the season looking to rebound after a year that fell short of its usual standard. Questions surrounding Patrick Mahomes’ health add another layer of uncertainty, but expectations remain high that the team will return to form behind its franchise quarterback.
Denver, meanwhile, is viewed as a team that could have reached greater heights if not for injuries at the quarterback position. The Broncos’ recent progress has been tied to steady leadership and improvements across the roster, positioning them as a legitimate contender within the division.

Aikman recently shared his thoughts about next season’s Week 1 game between Kansas City and Denver. This can be seen in a video posted by ESPN.
“Yeah, it’s a great opener,” Aikman said. “I mean, you make a good point. As far as these quarterbacks coming off serious injuries, I think everyone’s wondering whether or not Patrick Mahomes, obviously, is going to be back for that one. A down year last year for that franchise. I expect them to come back and be the team that we’ve seen for much of the last decade. And then, of course, with Denver, you could argue that they were a quarterback injury away from making it to the Super Bowl. It’s unfortunate for that organization, but what a great job Sean Payton has done. So, to kick off Week 1 in a divisional game, I always liked that as a player. When you opened up against a divisional opponent and kind of helped set the tone in what is a very competitive division.”
The matchup carries added weight given the familiarity between the two teams and the stakes that come with divisional play. Early-season results in these contests often influence playoff positioning and can set the tone for the remainder of the schedule.
The Week 1 meeting between Kansas City and Denver represents more than just an opening game. It offers an early glimpse into the balance of power within the division and provides both teams with an opportunity to establish themselves as contenders from the start.
