Chelsea make a decision on their transfer strategy under Xabi Alonso

The Chelsea board are prepared to make a significant structural compromise to land their primary manager target Xabi Alonso.

The transfer strategy at Chelsea under the BlueCo ownership has faced intense criticism due to them stockpiling young, unproven talent at the expense of squad balance.

Since 2022, the club has spent over £1.5 billion, yet the approach of signing players under the age of 25 has left the dressing room lacking the leadership and experience necessary to manage Premier League matches.

This summer, there is a clear recognition that the strategy must evolve. The board is expected to change things up to bring in Premier League-proven and emotionally resilient players.

But let’s not speak too soon, as we need to see proof of this change of tactic.

Chelsea won’t impose signings on Xabi Alonso

In a change of approach, a report from the Guardian has claimed that there would be zero desire on Chelsea’s part to impose players on Xabi Alonso if he becomes manager.

As well as this, Chelsea’s recruitment structure is not about to change. The Blues have a team of five sporting directors, headed by Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart, but there is a recognition that someone of Xabi Alonso’s stature must be listened to when it comes to signings.

The sporting director aspect may upset a few Chelsea supporters, especially as they’ve escaped unpunished through this mess despite causing some of it.

Enzo Maresca will feel hard done by

Enzo Maresca would likely view the potential shift in strategy under Xabi Alonso with a lot of frustration, given that his own stint was defined by the owners’ refusal to grant him similar authority.

He was frequently denied a meaningful voice in recruitment, most notably when his urgent pleas for a centre-back to replace the injured Levi Colwill were ignored in favour of signing more unproven young attackers like Estevao Willian and Jamie Gittens.

The irony that Chelsea is now reportedly willing to loosen their grip for Alonso, offering him the very control over signings and squad strategy that Maresca was sacked for demanding.
