NFL legend Michael Irvin has jumped to Mike Vrabel’s defense as the New England Patriots head coach weathers the Dianna Russini scandal.

Vrabel has been wrapped up in an intense scandal following the New York Post’s release of photos showing him spending time with sports reporter Russini at an adults-only resort in Arizona. Both Vrabel and Russini, who are both married with children, initially rejected claims of an affair, but the Patriots coach later acknowledged poor judgment, expressed remorse, and entered counseling.

Russini ultimately resigned from her role at The Athletic amid the fallout. While Vrabel has retained his position in New England, the organization publicly supported him after he announced his commitment to seeking professional help. Russini was recently snapped kissing her husband on Mother’s Day.

The scandal has caught the attention of NFL fans, with some piling on Vrabel and Russini as new layers get added.

However, NFL legend Irvin has leaped to Vrabel and Russini’s defense, hitting out at fans interjecting in their personal lives.

“We all want to jump in personal lives,” Irvin, a three-time Super Bowl champion, who has been at the center of numerous scandals of his own over the years, told Ariel Helwani.

“Dude, if I just get a peek at your history, I'm sure it'll tell me something. We all forget that we have done s—t when we're talking about somebody else, and then we want to castrate and kill them.”

To make matters worse, layers keep getting added to the story. The Post has since released images showing Vrabel and Russini dining together at the Arizona resort, along with older photos that reportedly capture them kissing in a New York bar back in March 2020.

The Daily Mail also published pictures of the pair at a casino in Mississippi in January 2024. The story took another turn last Thursday when a video surfaced of the two arriving for an alleged boat trip, said to have occurred just months before she welcomed her first child.

Russini married Shake Shack executive Kevin Goldschmidt in September 2020, while Vrabel has been with his wife, Jen, since 1999. Vrabel committed to counseling when the scandal first caught fire.

“As I said the other day, I promised my family, this organization and this team that I was going to give them the best version of me that I can possibly give them,” he said.

“In order to do so, I have committed to seeking counseling, starting this weekend. This is something that I have given a lot of thought to and is something I would advise a player to do if I was counseling them.”

“I have always wanted to lead by example and I believe this is what I have to do to be the best husband, father and coach that I possibly can be,” Vrabel continued.

“This is not an easy thing for me to admit, but it is one that I know will make me a better person. I appreciate the support that everyone has given me and promise a stronger resolve as a result.”
