Champions Man City lead the way in WSL team of the season

The Women’s Super League draws to a close on Saturday with all 12 teams in action on the final day.

Here, the Press Association takes a look at this season’s standout performers.

Hannah Hampton – Chelsea

Hampton has enjoyed another stellar season with the gloves for Chelsea.

Despite missing three WSL games from the middle of November through to the start of the new year, the goalkeeper has kept seven clean sheets in 17 appearances – level with Manchester City’s Ayaka Yamashita and Manchester United’s Phallon Tullis-Joyce in the battle for the Golden Glove.

Lynn Wilms – Aston Villa

Wilms has enjoyed an impressive debut season with Villa after arriving at the club from Wolfsburg ahead of the new campaign.

The Netherlands international can play centre-back or full-back and has been a reliable presence for Villa, while she is also one of the leading assist providers in the league with seven in 16 appearances.

Ruby Mace – Everton

England midfielder Mace joined Everton last summer and has featured 20 times for the club this season, demonstrating her versatility by slotting into the heart of defence where she has starred throughout their campaign.

A highlight saw her provide two assists for Martina Fernandez as Everton came from behind to beat Aston Villa 2-1 in February and secure their first WSL win at Goodison Park this season.

Kerstin Casparij – Manchester City

Although City have enjoyed plenty of success with strong forward options in their title-winning season, Casparij has been pivotal in both attack and defence.

The Dutch right-back has been a key outlet in providing crosses into the area and is joint-top of the assist charts with seven so far, along with three goals.

Ellie Carpenter – Chelsea

The Australia defender joined Chelsea from Lyon in the summer and has quickly slotted into the team’s backline.

Carpenter has worked well down the right flank as part of the Blues’ attacks with her passing.

Olivia Holdt – Tottenham

Tottenham have enjoyed an impressive season under head coach Martin Ho and Holdt has been a key part in securing a fifth-placed finish.

The midfielder has been one of their more creative outlets, scoring seven goals and providing three assists.

Mariona Caldentey – Arsenal

Caldentey starred in her debut WSL season last year and has continued to prove influential for Arsenal this year.

The Spain midfielder has found herself making an impact from a slightly deeper role for the Gunners across the course of this season, as well as scoring three goals.

Vivianne Miedema – Manchester City

Miedema has continued to impress as either a striker or attacking midfielder in City’s line-up with more crucial goal contributions.

The Netherlands international has featured 19 times in the WSL this season, scoring 10 goals – including a brace against rivals Manchester United in March – and setting up five.

Khadija Shaw – Manchester City

Shaw is set to be crowned Golden Boot winner for a third successive year after playing a key role in City’s title-winning campaign.

The striker’s standout displays include four goals against Aston Villa in December and a hat-trick against Tottenham back in March and though there is some speculation over her future at City, 19 goals in 21 WSL outings have been crucial to the team’s success.

Kirsty Hanson – Aston Villa

Hanson has starred in Villa’s forward line this season and is behind only Shaw in the WSL goalscoring charts for this season.

The striker has been a consistent force in front of the net with 12 goals scored from 21 games.

Alessia Russo – Arsenal
