After finishing last in the NFC North, the Detroit Lions’ 2026 schedule is considered the “easiest in the NFL” because they’re scheduled to play teams that finished below .500 in 2025. The Tennessee Titans,New York Jets,Arizona Cardinals, and the New York Giants are on Detroit’s 2026 schedule, and each finished last in their respective divisions. However, three of the toughest opponents Detroit will face in 2026 are in their own division. Those six games could very well determine the Lions’ postseason fate.
Detroit Lions’ Toughest Opponents In 2026 Schedule
In addition to an altered roster, head coaching changes and cultural shifts can play a significant role in a team’s resurgence. One only has to look at the Chicago Bears’ 2025 transformation as an example. In 2024, the Bears were dead last in the NFC North division with a 5-12 record; a year later, the team claimed the division crown, while earning the NFC’s number 2 seed with an 11-6 record.
The NFC North Division
In 2025, the NFC North was the most competitive division in the league, with all four teams finishing above .500. The Lions can expect these divisional matchups to be among the toughest battles they will face this season. Those six games will also be a critical determining factor in whether the Lions make the postseason. These will be the most critical games for Detroit, ranked in order of importance:
Week 17 | Sunday, January 3rd | Detroit Lions @ Chicago Bears– 4:25 p.m. ET (FOX)
Playing outdoors at Soldier Field in frigid January is hardly an ideal environment for a high-scoring passing game. Furthermore, snow and icy conditions will hamper even an elite ground game. However, the biggest threat to a Lions victory comes from the Bears’ strengthened roster following Chicago’s busy offseason. After the sudden retirement of center Drew Dalman, the trade of wide receiver D.J Moore, and the free agency loss of LB Tremaine Edmunds, Chicago acquired former Lions’ WR/KR Kalif Raymond. Losing a talented player like Raymond to a division rival in free agency stings.
Through the Draft, GM Ryan Poles offset the free agency loss of safeties Kevin Byard and Jaquan Brisker with Oregon Ducks safety Dillon Thieneman, whose elite athleticism was the talk of the Combine. Poles added another strong secondary talent with cornerback Malik Muhammad in the 4th round. Both are expected to be starters. After a vastly improved offense in 2025, the Bears enter 2026 armed with a stronger defense. This game might rely more on the strength of the Lions’ superior defense, particularly if the weather becomes a factor.
Week 12 | Thursday, November 26th | Chicago Bears @ Detroit Lions – 1:00 p.m. ET
Before the Week 17 road game, the Lions will get a chance to play the Bears at Ford Field. It’s become a familiar refrain: “The Detroit Lions will host the Bears on Thanksgiving Day.” Once again, the NFL is exploiting the intense rivalry between the two teams as a ratings draw. But in the business of football, it makes sense. Both teams are postseason contenders. The rivalry between Dan Campbell and Ben Johnson only adds to the mystique.
At the annual owners meeting, Campbell was asked where the two currently stand with each other. “Yeah, it’s a good relationship. We talked yesterday. Look, man, our families are still around each other. His kids, his wife,… him. When you’re with somebody as long as I was with Ben, you’re going to have a relationship. Now, when we play each other, we want to beat the crap out of each other. That’s the nature of the business.”
Week 7 | Sunday, October 25th | Green Bay Packers@ Detroit Lions– 4:25 p.m. ET
Unlike the Bears, who were given high marks for their offseason moves, the Green Bay Packers were criticized for not doing enough to upgrade the roster. GM Bryan Gutekunst traded EDGE Rashan Gary to the Dallas Cowboys and WR Dontayvion Wicks to the Philadelphia Eagles. In addition, the roster lost several key players through free agency, including WR Romeo Doubs and cornerback Trevon Diggs. After losing Malik Willis, the Packers signed QB Tyrod Taylor to back up Jordan Love and acquired WR Skyy Moore.
As a result of Micah Parsons’ trade, Green Bay was left without a first-round draft pick. Nonetheless, cornerback Brandon Cisse, the team’s second-round pick, looks to be an impact player.
However, the biggest impact may be the loss of former DC Jeff Hafley, now the head coach of the Miami Dolphins. Jonathan Gannon takes over play-calling for the Green Bay defense. There is no question that a loss to Green Bay will undermine the Lions’ playoff hopes, but this season, Matt LaFleur’s team isn’t projected to be one of the NFL title contenders. The Lions should emerge with the victory.
Week 8 |Sunday, November 1st | Minnesota Vikings @ Detroit Lions–1:00 p.m. ET (FOX)
The Minnesota Vikings’ biggest offseason move was the signing of quarterback Kyler Murray, who provides veteran leadership and experience to an offense that continues to struggle with J.J. McCarthy’s growing pains.
Despite flashes of promise and Kevin O’Connell’s reputation as the quarterback whisperer, McCarthy has yet to demonstrate the consistency and stability the offense needs following the departure of Sam Darnold. Brian Flores’ defense continues to be the team’s strongest unit, and the addition of first-round Draft pick, Florida linebacker Caleb Banks, could provide another crucial element. However, after the Vikings swept the Lions in 2025, ruining Christmas and torpedoing the team’s playoff hopes, look for Detroit to come out swinging and seeking vengeance.
Week 2 | Thursday, September 17th | Lions @ Buffalo Bills–8:15 p.m. ET Prime
Any game featuring the superior talents of both Josh Allen and Jared Goff promises to be a thrilling, hard-fought battle. The Buffalo Bills’fierce offense, featuring MVP Allen and James Cook, is elite. At their last meeting at Ford Field in November of 2024, both teams put on a brilliant offensive display, scoring a combined total of 90 points.
Offseason changes to the Bills include a head coaching change from Sean McDermott to Joe Brady, who was Buffalo’s offensive coordinator. Brady and Allen have a great working relationship, and he’s credited with developing a more diverse passing game and establishing Allen as the NFL’s most mobile QB. The addition of wide receiver D.J. Moore provides Allen with another reliable weapon.
Jim Leonhard takes over as the defensive coordinator as talented Clemson OLBT.J. Parkerjoins newly signed free agents Bradley Chubb and C.J Gardner-Johnson. Buffalo is as talented and competitive a team as the Lions will face all year, but expect Detroit’s new EDGE power duo of Aidan Hutchinson and Michigan rookie Derrick Moore to wreak havoc on Allen’s game.
Week 11 |Sunday, November 22nd | Tampa Bay Buccaneers @ Lions–1:00 p.m. ET (CBS)
While playing the AFC Champion New England Patriots in an international game will undoubtedly be challenging, winning an NFC division battle is far more important to Detroit’s playoff plans.
Although the Lions will be playing the Tampa Bay Buccaneerson the friendly home turf of Ford Field, several things about this game could make it one of the most challenging games on the Lions’ schedule. In recent years, Bucs veteran quarterback Baker Mayfield was in the MVP conversation along with Allen and Goff. During the Lions’ historic 15-2 season, Detroit lost to Tampa Bay by a score of 20-16, early in the 2024 season. Last year, the Lions made up for that loss with the infamous “Legion of Whom” 24-9 victory.
Retooling their defense through free agency, the Bucs acquired two prime weapons in former Lions Alex Anzalone and Al-Quadin Muhammad through free agency. Both players were outstanding during their Detroit tenure, but left feeling unappreciated by the Lions’ front office. That perceived snub could translate to an additional incentive to prove their value to Lions management with an exceptional performance on the football field.
In the NFL Draft, Tampa Bay selected EDGE Rueben Bain Jr. with their first pick and highly rated cornerback Keionte Scott. After more than a decade, the Bucs are without the skills of WR1 Mike Evans. However, with Mayfield fully recovered from his 2025 injuries, a healthy Bucky Irving, and the addition of promising rookie wide receiver Ted Hurst, this game could be another high-scoring offensive battle. Hold tight; this game could become a barn burner.
The Lions finish the season with a Week 18 game against the Packers at Lambeau Field, with the date and time to be determined.
