Browns' QB nightmare given harsh reminder by NFL schedule

The NFL's schedule makers didn't waste any time.

They're going to rub the Cleveland Browns' QB nightmare in their face right away in Week 1.

The Browns' first opponent in the schedule unveiled Thursday night? The Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

And yes, the Bucs are quarterbacked by Baker Mayfield.

The Browns had drafted Mayfield No. 1 overall, and he even did the seemingly impossible and got them to the playoffs.

But an injury-plagued final season reduced Mayfield's performance, and the Browns chose to move on from him and replace him with the expensive and risky Deshaun Watson -- a maneuver that clearly hasn't worked out.

Watson is still in town for Cleveland, and he'll compete with Shedeur Sanders for this season's starting job. At least right now, the Browns also have Dillon Gabriel and Taylen Green in the QB room.

Most likely, the Browns will have to use their 2027 first-round pick on a quarterback, but first, they'll have to navigate another season that seems like it'll be less-than-ideal at the most important position in sports.

Meanwhile, Mayfield took a couple stops in between and then developed into one of the best QBs in the NFL for Tampa Bay.

The Browns may have never allowed Mayfield to fully spread his wings, but it still has to be painful for Cleveland fans to see him on the other side.

And this season, he'll be directly on the other sideline, right away in the season opener.
