Chelsea have a lot left to play for this season. The FA Cup final is coming up against Manchester City. Also, the Blues will surely be looking to finish as high as possible in the Premier League table. While a Champions League spot might be unrealistic, European qualification is still within reach.
That being said, a lot of fans might already be looking towards the future. This has been another season to forget if you are a Chelsea supporter. The hope is that BlueCo will change their model, bring in a top manager and proven players in the summer to get things back on track after four disappointing seasons since the takeover.
At the same time, the club also need to make sure that they keep their best players. They cannot afford to see them leave and further weaken the squad.
Levi Colwill falls under that category. There has been talk of an extension recently and there is further good news. According to TheBluesFeed, the contract is all but agreed, the announcement and final small details were parked while recovery was ongoing. Expect the announcement imminently.
Levi Colwill is Chelsea’s best defender
We had already covered the talks of an extension with Colwill earlier. Now, it looks like it is only a matter of time before it becomes official.
That is certainly the right decision. Of course, there are many who are wary of how Colwill will perform following the ACL injury that kept him out of action for the majority of this season. In the past, we have seen many centre-backs pick up similar injuries and never look the same.
Chelsea fans will be hoping that is not the case with Colwill. In his absence, it became very evident that he is an integral part of the club’s backline. Not only does he raise the bar as a defender but also as a leader at the back as well.
Colwill’s performance against Liverpool will raise Chelsea hopes for Manchester City game
Coming from a long layoff, most would expect Colwill to look rusty. That simply was not the case in the game against Liverpool, his first start since the ACL injury.
Of course, Colwill needs more minutes in the tank in order to get back to his best. But Chelsea already look better defensively with him in the lineup.
We can only wait and see how things will play out for Colwill over the next few months. Let’s hope that he avoids any further injuries. For now, the next task is the FA Cup final against Manchester City. If Chelsea are to have any chance of winning, they need the Englishman to put in an immense performance at the back.
