LJ’s Sports Tavern & Grill in Madison uses 10 remotes to manage 25 TVs showing games for its customers. The bar’s main streaming service for the NFL season is Sunday Ticket, which is a streaming platform for businesses showing games to large game day crowds.

“The NFL Ticket alone is well over $10,000. I believe last year we paid over $13,000,” Kylie Kavanaugh, the manager at LJ’s Sports Tavern & Grill said. “And that is something that’s impacting bars all over the country. It’s incredibly expensive and it goes up almost every single year. It’s all based on how many people that you can have in your bar.”

LJ’s fits 160 people inside its bar.

“We get a lot of calls leading up to football season and honestly most weekends asking if we have the ‘ticket’ because they want to be able to come watch the game somewhere,” Kavanaugh said.

Tom Becker said he has no subscriptions and watches games through his antenna.

“Sunday Night Football is about it,” Becker said. “Monday Night is usually a radio game if I am doing housework or something. I will have that on the radio.”

Zach Schmidt has around four subscriptions to watch NFL games. He said football is a big part of Wisconsin’s culture.

“It’s definitely a hassle. It’d be nice if we just had one area where we could go to watch all the games. It definitely makes it harder to watch a specific game that if you have fantasy football players in it or something that you want to watch,” Schmidt said.

Schmidt said it’s cheaper to head to a bar and watch games there instead of adding more subscriptions to monthly expenses.

“I’ll go have a couple drinks and a meal with my friends and, you know, much worth it versus paying $100 for subscription,” Schmidt said.

The NFL schedule for the 2026 season was released Thursday night.
