Bobby Okereke is still a free agent after being released by the New York Giants this offseason, but he could sign a contract before the 2026 season begins. Okereke, a former third-round pick, spent the first four years with the Indianapolis Colts, establishing himself as a tackling machine known for his durability. The veteran broke out during the 2023 season, recording 149 total tackles, 11 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, 4 forced fumbles, 2 interceptions, and 10 passes defensed. Unfortunately, he took a step back during the past back-to-back seasons in New York; his missed tackle rate increased, and he suffered a herniated disc in his back during the 2024 campaign.
The linebacker hasn’t produced much noise on the market since his release from the Giants. However, it could be any day that Okereke could sign with a team, but it might have to be in July. Meanwhile, the Giants drafted Arvell Reese while signing Tremaine Edmunds to strengthen their own linebacker room, since the team was forced to cut the veteran due to salary cap issues. The former Giant won’t receive the top contract, similar to Devin Lloyd or Jaelan Phillips did in Carolina, but a one-year deal is suitable for the linebacker.

Even though there are linebackers, including Matt Milano and Bobby Wagner, they’re on the older side. This makes Okereke, 29, the top available linebacker. While Wagner offers championship experience and Milano was part of a dominant Bills defense, the veteran is a leader for a team that is looking for reliable depth. Okereke has been linked to multiple teams the past few weeks and is considered one of the top free agents, so whoever signs him will probably be getting a gem.
Possible Destinations
Dallas Cowboys
The Dallas Cowboys have done phenomenally well upgrading their linebacker unit. The team drafted Jaishawn Barham for depth while trading for Dee Winters. Before that, the Cowboys traded for Rashan Gary, even though he’s coming off a down year. However, the team might not be done.
The Cowboys still have a hole between Marist Liufau and Shemar James, and even though they’ve shown flashes down the stretch, it’s sensible for them to get Okereke since he’s a tackling machine. Combine these three players, and the Cowboys should be in serious business.
Kansas City Chiefs
Meanwhile, the Chiefs are in dire need of a linebacker after losing Leo Chenal to Washington. 2026 draft pick Jadon Canady is considered a steal, but they’re better off with an established veteran. Okereke won’t be starting over Cole Christiansen, but he’d be a viable rotational leader to help Drue Tranquill and Nick Bolton.
Minnesota Vikings
After trading LB standout Jonathan Greenard to the Eagles, the Vikings should be pairing Andrew Van Ginkel with another veteran. The team has one of the best cornerback rooms, but it can’t compensate for how this linebacker depth is looking. Bobby Okereke won’t light up the field, but since they were forced to ship Greenard due to cap concerns, he could have some unfinished business and get back to his old self.
Indianapolis Colts
The Colts are also in the market after trading Zaire Franklin. Despite drafting CJ Allen and Bryce Boettcher, Okereke could be a viable veteran presence. They don’t need someone who needs to start, but ensure that Allen and Boettcher are ready for starting reps. With this potential opportunity, Okereke could revive his career while leaving the Colts linebacker room in a better place.
