Aaron Rodgers' return not the 'Welcome to NFL' moment Drew Allar wanted

The [Pittsburgh Steelers](https://www.sportingnews.com/us/nfl/pittsburgh-steelers) took a leap by drafting quarterback Drew Allar out of Penn State in the third round of the 2026 NFL Draft. The decision had many asking if he would be the future, and if not, why take him that high?

Especially with the latest news out of Pittsburgh saying Allar was being stripped of his prior knowledge as a QB and being instructed under Mike McCarthy's staff. Not to mention, Allar's last season did not go as planned, and it ended with a season-ending injury.

Allar will now have to compete to play with three other quarterbacks, including Aaron Rodgers, who is returning for his 22nd season in Pittsburgh. The future Hall-of-Famer announced his decision on Saturday night, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

For Allar, it's sink or swim time. McCarthy drafted Allar because he liked his potential and believes he can fix him. However, does that mean he's the future when Rodgers finally decides to hang it up? Taking a year to develop a third-rounder isn't uncommon. But having him learn his position from scratch is. Naturally, this will come down to mechanics and fit.

McCarthy has spent a majority of his NFL career working with Rodgers, Dak Prescott and others. It's time to bring out Allar’s best traits and see if he's ready. For now, Allar is fourth-string behind Rodgers, Will Howard and Mason Rudolph before the upcoming season.
