Patriots' Opponent In Home Opener Signs Future Hof QB

Up until Saturday, the [New England Patriots](https://nesn.com/new-england-patriots) did not know who would be under center for the Pittsburgh Steelers in the team's 2026 home opener.

Future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers finally agreed to a one-year deal to return to Pittsburgh after months of speculation.

It will be the 42-year-old's 22nd NFL season.

Head coach Mike Vrabel saw Rodgers in his first year with New England. The Patriots and Steelers clashed in Week 3 last.

Rodgers was held to a measly 139 yards, but threw two touchdowns in the red zone.

Running back Jaylen Warren recorded just 47 yards on 18 carries, and superstar wide receiver DK Metcalf was shut down to the tune of three catches for 32 yards.

Still, the Steelers left Gillette Stadium victorious by a score of 21-14.

It was a disaster of a game from the Patriots. Maye threw an interception and fell victim to the fumble bug that bit Rhamondre Stevenson and Antonio Gibson. In total, the Patriots outgained the Steelers 369 to 203, but were unable to overcome their five turnovers.

The Steelers have completely retooled since then. Their wide receiver room now includes top-trade target Michael Pittman Jr. and top draft pick Germie Bernard.

Pittsburgh will have playoff aspirations in its first year under new head coach Mike McCarthy.

The Patriots will have the benefit of 11 days of rest and preparation coming off the Wednesday night season opener against the Seattle Seahawks.
