Why Xabi Alonso believes Chelsea squad has foundations of a title-challenging side

Xabi Alonso is set to become Chelsea’s new manager, and it appears that the Spaniard is a fan of their current squad.

Following Chelsea’s 1-0 defeat to Manchester City in the FA Cup final on Saturday, it emerged that Alonso has agreed to take over.

Many are not expecting Alonso to be in for an easy ride, with the Blues currently sitting ninth in the Premier League table.

Xabi Alonso believes in Chelsea’s young talent

Despite how Chelsea’s season has gone, Alonso seems to have great faith in their squad.

According to TEAMtalk, Alonso thinks Chelsea’s squad has the “foundations of a title-challenging side” because of all the young talent it possesses.

This season, the Club World Cup winners have been questioned for assembling such a young and inexperienced squad.

However, it looks as though Alonso believes that this young group of players could eventually go on to achieve something special.

The announcement of Alonso as Chelsea manager is expected on Sunday, so supporters should get to hear from him very soon.

Balanced squad will be key for Chelsea and Xabi Alonso

It is great that Chelsea do have a lot of young players who are talented in their squad. If the likes of Cole Palmer and Moises Caicedo fulfil their full potential, you will be looking at two of the best footballers in the world.

Palmer has arguably reached that status already, although he will have his doubters after allowing his form to dip this season.

Clearly, though, Chelsea need more experience to go with the squad’s youthfulness. Hopefully, Alonso and the club’s decision-makers have come to realise that and address it in the summer transfer window.

The noise coming out of Stamford Bridge suggests that is the case, but only time will tell. Chelsea fans will be watching how the club operate in the transfer market very closely.

If they want to have a better season next year, Alonso needs to be given more seasoned professionals.
