NFL Notes: One thought on every player on Patriots 90-man roster

The Patriots’ 2026 schedule was announced this week, and they’re getting ready to participate in their first formal practices of the offseason later this month when organized team activities begin May 27.

Now seems like a good time to run down the Patriots’ 90-man roster and give one thought on each player.

0 CB Christian Gonzalez

The best defender on the Patriots’ roster, Gonzalez is eligible for a contract extension at any time. The team has publicly expressed interest in locking up the Pro Bowl selection.

2 EDGE Harold Landry III

Health is the major question mark for Landry after he closed out the 2025 season severely limited by a knee injury suffered in Week 6.

3 WR DeMario Douglas

The Patriots’ wide receiver room will be crowded if they acquire A.J. Brown after June 1. That could leave Douglas fighting for a roster spot.

4 S Craig Woodson

Woodson switched from No. 31 this offseason. He was a pleasant surprise as a fourth-round starter last season.

5 EDGE Dre’Mont Jones

Acquired via free agency to replace K’Lavon Chaisson, Jones — a bigger-bodied defender — should have one starting edge spot locked up this season.

7 CB Carlton Davis III

Davis, 29, had a career high 13 penalties last season, but he also allowed just 24.5 yards per game.

9 WR Kayshon Boutte

Boutte was involved in trade rumors before the draft but wasn’t moved. He showed promise in 2025 but would likely be competing for a starting role if he sticks around and if the Patriots acquire Brown.

10 QB Drake Maye

Maye took a massive step forward in 2025. With a more difficult schedule this season, can he repeat with a better offensive cast? Brown would provide a major lift.

13 WR Mack Hollins

Hollins is the de facto veteran leader in the Patriots’ wide receiver room now. Like Boutte, he would be competing for a starting role if Brown is acquired.

14 LB Robert Spillane

The Patriots’ defense played at a different level last season when Spillane was on the field. They really struggled when he missed time with an ankle injury late.

15 QB Behren Morton

Morton had an impressive rookie minicamp session in front of reporters, completing 12-of-12 passes. He’ll likely serve as the emergency third quarterback this season as long as he plays well in the preseason.

16 QB Tommy DeVito

“Tommy Cutlets” has been elevated to second string after the Patriots released Joshua Dobbs this offseason. He still has to fend off Morton in practice.

17 P Bryce Baringer

Baringer had some struggles last season, so it was notable that the Patriots did not bring in punting competition this offseason.

18 WR Kyle Williams

Williams was mostly quiet last season, catching 10 passes for 209 yards with three touchdowns, but he did show some explosive playmaking ability. Let’s see if he can take a second-year leap.

19 WR Jimmy Kibble

An undrafted free agent out of Georgetown, Kibble has enticing athleticism (4.49s 40-yard dash) for his size (6-1, 199).

19 CB Kobee Minor

Mr. Irrelevant in the 2025 NFL Draft, Minor will compete for a depth cornerback role this offseason.

21 CB Karon Prunty

Prunty was a bit of a surprise fifth-round pick, since he wasn’t ranked on most media draft boards. He has the requisite speed and length for the position.

22 CB Charles Woods

Woods served as the backup outside cornerback last season after being claimed off waivers from the Rams. He held up well in limited action.

23 WR Nick DeGennaro

Another undrafted wide receiver with impressive athleticism, DeGennaro moved well during rookie minicamp.

23 S John Saunders Jr.

Saunders spent time on the Patriots’ 53-man roster and practice squad in 2025. Now he competes for a roster spot.

24 S Dell Pettus

Pettus currently projects as the Patriots’ third safety behind Woodson and Kevin Byard. He tends to make plays when he’s on the field.

25 CB Marcus Jones

One of the Patriots’ best overall players, Jones could have earned Pro Bowl honors last season for his work as a slot cornerback and return man.

26 RB Terrell Jennings

Jennings will compete with rookies Jam Miller and Myles Montgomery and 2025 UDFA Lan Larison for the Patriots’ third running back spot.

27 CB Marcellas Dial Jr.

Dial tore his ACL last summer in training camp but could earn a roster spot this year as Jones’ backup in the slot.

28 CB Kindle Vildor

A veteran cornerback with most of his experience outside, Vildor will compete with younger players for a depth role.

29 CB Channing Canada

Canada, a TCU product, was a priority free agent for the Patriots, earning $267,500 in contract guarantees. He has good size and speed and projects as an outside cornerback. He’s a UDFA to watch this summer.

29 WR Jeremiah Webb

Webb was a practice squad favorite of the coaching staff and now returns for his second season.

30 RB Jam Miller

A seventh-round pick out of Alabama, Miller lacked production in college but has the speed to succeed in the NFL.

31 S Kevin Byard III

The Patriots are hoping Byard can bring his ballhawk tendencies to the Patriots. He had seven interceptions in 2025.

32 RB TreVeyon Henderson

Henderson provided big plays out of the backfield last season but needs to be more consistent.

33 S Mike Brown

Brown, a veteran who comes over from the Titans, is the favorite to serve as the fourth safety.

34 RB Lan Larison

Larison showed promise last summer but suffered a season-ending injury in camp.

34 S Peter Manuma

Manuma earned a spot on the 90-man roster with a successful tryout in rookie minicamp.

35 LB K.J. Britt

Britt is the favorite to back up Spillane and Christian Elliss at linebacker this season. He comes over from the Dolphins.

36 K Andy Borregales

Borregales doesn’t have any competition after proving his dependability last season as a rookie.

36 CB Kenneth Harris

Another UDFA, Harris mostly played in the slot at Oklahoma State.

37 FB Jack Westover

Westover transitioned to fullback last season, but the position is crowded now. Does he move back to tight end?

38 RB Rhamondre Stevenson

Stevenson was one of the Patriots’ best players after the quarter point in the season. Let’s see if he can keep it up with a better offensive line in front of him.

39 CB Brandon Crossley

Crossley spent most of last season on the practice squad and participated in rookie minicamp as a roster player.

39 RB Myles Montgomery

Montgomery was another priority undrafted free agent, earning $272,500 in contract guarantees. That shows the Patriots like him.

41 S Brenden Schooler

One of the best special teams players in the NFL, Schooler also serves as a fifth safety.

42 EDGE Jesse Luketa

Let’s see what Luketa can offer on the edge this offseason. There’s room for the veteran linebacker to make the team.

43 EDGE Bradyn Swinson

To make the 53-man roster this season, Swinson will need to prove that he took a sizable second-year leap.

44 FB Reggie Gilliam

Gilliam upgrades the fullback position. He’s also confident that he can produce in the passing game.

45 EDGE Quintayvious Hutchins

Hutchins, the Patriots’ final pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, has an uphill battle for a roster spot. He was charged with domestic assault this past week.

46 FB Brock Lampe

Lampe missed last season, forcing Westover to switch to fullback. Let’s see how he looks this offseason.

47 LS Julian Ashby

The rare drafted long snapper, Ashby has competition from Niko Lalos this offseason.

48 LB Namdi Obiazor

Obiazor, a TCU product, brings speed to the linebacker corps as a sixth-round pick.

49 LB Chad Muma

Muma was added midway through last season and immediately found a role on special teams. He’ll compete for a backup linebacker spot.

50 EDGE Gabe Jacas

The second-round pick out of Illinois could emerge as a starter this season. He brings “power” to the Patriots’ defense, according to Joe Kim, a former coach with the Patriots and University of Illinois.

51 OT James Hudson III

Hudson showed a lack of discipline on the field last season. He’ll compete for a roster spot with a slew of young tackles.

52 OT Marcus Bryant

Bryant showed promise last summer, filled in during one game last season, then was on the inactive list for the rest of the year.

53 LB Christian Elliss

A projected starter next to Spillane, Elliss played better as the season went along in 2025.

54 LB Otis Reese

Reese spent last year on the practice squad and comes with special teams experience.

55 C Jared Wilson

Wilson seemed very excited to move back to center while speaking to the media Thursday. Let’s see if it can elevate his game.

58 EDGE Xavier Holmes

The James Madison product also earned a spot on the roster as a rookie minicamp tryout player.

59 LB Khalil Jacobs

Jacobs was a productive player at Missouri and latched on as a UDFA this spring.

61 OT Sebastian Gutierrez

Gutierrez will compete for a role after spending parts of last season on the practice squad.

62 LS Niko Lalos

Competition for Ashby, Lalos has six games of NFL experience with the Giants.

63 G Mehki Butler

The second-year pro also showed initiative, participating in rookie minicamp as a roster player.

64 OL Jacob Rizy

Rizy, a UDFA, has experience at guard and center, where the Patriots currently lack depth.

66 LT Will Campbell

The Patriots have held firm that Campbell is their left tackle. He’ll have to play better after a disappointing playoff run.

67 G Andrew Rupcich

Rupcich played under head coach Mike Vrabel in 2022 with the Titans. He was on the practice squad for most of last season.

68 OT Dametrious Crownover

Crownover brings elite length and athleticism as a converted tight end. Can he beat out Bryant and Hudson for a roster spot?

69 G JonDarius Morgan

Another UDFA offensive lineman, Morgan, who comes out of UAB and South Carolina, could see plenty of reps at guard this summer.

70 OL Caedan Wallace

Wallace was drafted as a tackle but was moved to guard last summer. He played in just four games in 2025.

71 RG Mike Onwenu

Onwenu is on the last year of his contract. He was the Patriots’ most consistent offensive lineman in 2025.

72 OT Lorenz Metz

Metz, who was born in Germany, will be popular before the Patriots’ Week 10 matchup against the Lions in Munich.

74 OT Caleb Lomu

The Patriots liked Lomu enough to trade up for him in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft. If all goes as planned, he’ll serve as a backup this season.

75 LG Alijah Vera-Tucker

Wilson raved about Vera-Tucker’s athleticism. He missed last season with a torn triceps but has said he’s almost back to full health.

76 RT Morgan Moses

The veteran offensive tackle is 35 years old. He stayed healthy all last season, but the Patriots can’t count on that happening again in 2026.

77 OL Ben Brown

Brown will likely serve as the Patriots’ top backup center and guard. He signed a two-year contract extension last season.

80 TE Julian Hill

Hill was non-tendered as a restricted free agent with the Dolphins, then went on to sign a three-year, $15 million contract with the Patriots. He’ll likely begin the season as the Patriots’ No. 2 tight end.

81 TE CJ Dippre

Dippre played in just two games as an undrafted rookie last season. He has an uphill battle for a roster spot.

82 TE Eli Raridon

The Patriots selected Raridon in the third round of the 2026 NFL Draft out of Notre Dame. If all goes well, he could be the Patriots starting tight end in a year or two.

83 WR Kyle Dixon

Another UDFA wide receiver, Dixon comes out of NAIA Culver-Stockton and began his college career playing baseball as a pitcher. He’s big and athletic.

84 TE Tanner Arkin

An undrafted free agent out of Illinois, Arkin is a blocking tight end who was college teammates with Jacas.

85 TE Hunter Henry

Hill praised Henry for his leadership this week. The captain has been as dependable as they come.

86 WR Efton Chism III

If you’re curious how many thirds there are on the Patriots’ roster, the answer is six. There are also four juniors. Chism spent all of last season on the 53-man roster but will have to earn his spot again this summer.

87 WR Romeo Doubs

The Patriots signed Doubs to a four-year, $68 million contract in free agency. The 26-year-old was a red-zone threat with the Packers and would be an ideal No. 2 receiver across from Brown.

88 WR Cameron Dorner

A fourth UDFA wide receiver, Dorner produced 911 yards and eight touchdowns at North Texas last season.

90 DT Christian Barmore

Barmore creates a disruptive 1-2 punch with Milton Williams in the middle of the Patriots’ defense. He could afford to be more consistent.

91 EDGE Elijah Ponder

The Cal Poly product was a surprise contributor as a rookie free agent last season. He’s a favorite of outside linebackers coach Mike Smith.

92 DT Joshua Farmer

The 2025 fourth-round pick played in 13 games with three starts last season but didn’t make a major impact. He could take on a bigger role this season with Khyiris Tonga now playing for the Chiefs.

93 DT Leonard Taylor III

“Lenny T” played in all four Patriots postseason games last season as a practice squad elevation. He has the edge for a roster spot this season.

94 DT Cory Durden

The Patriots signed Durden ahead of the 2025 season and he became one of their most dependable defenders. He also should take on a bigger role in Tonga’s absence.

95 DT Eric Gregory

Claimed off waivers from the Bengals last season, Gregory played in six games but was passed on the depth chart by Taylor.

96 DT David Blay Jr.

An intriguing UDFA defender, Blay is undersized but athletic for a defensive tackle.

97 DT Milton Williams

One of the Patriots’ best overall players, Williams lived up to his massive four-year, $104 million contract last season.

98 DT Jeremiah Pharms Jr.

Pharms lost his spot on the 53-man roster in December but re-signed to the practice squad. It would be surprising if he’s more than a practice squad player this season.

99 LB Amari Gainer

Gainer is undersized but experienced at inside and outside linebacker. He went to UNC with Maye.
