New England Patriots: Reveal Role for 1st Round Pick

The New England Patriots traded up to select Utah Utes standout tackle Caleb Lomu 28th overall in the 2026 NFL Draft. He primarily played left tackle in college, logging 24 starts throughout his three-year stint with the Utes. With Will Campbell expected to remain at left tackle, Morgan Moses set to return for his 13th season, and the starting five offensive line set, many are curious about Lomu’s role in his rookie season.

According to Mike Reiss of ESPN NFL Nation,Caleb Lomu is expected to compete for the swing tackle role during his rookie season, with James Hudson III as his primary competitor. As a result, the first-round pick will rotate at left and right tackle this offseason, as he works to become more familiar and comfortable on the right side. Ultimately, Lomu could take over at right tackle next year if the Patriots decide to move on from Morgan Moses or if he retires.

“I [view] myself as a tackle in general —left or right side. I just happened to play left in college and that’s what I got comfortable to, playing those three years at left tackle at Utah,” Lomu said, via Reiss. “My first year there I was kind of a swing tackle. I feel comfortable at left but also working at right these last couple months and feel just as good on the right side as well. So either tackle position I’m happy to play and feel comfortable playing.”
