The New England Patriots wide receiver room could soon get a boost with the addition of A.J. Brown.
New England has been rumored to acquire Brown after June 1 from the Philadelphia Eagles to bolster the team’s offense. If the Pats do acquire Brown, the wide receiver room would be crowded and NFL analyst Moe Moton of Bleacher Report named DeMario Douglas a potential cut candidate.
“DeMario Douglas led the New England Patriots with 561 receiving yards in 2023,” Moton wrote in an article published on Sunday. “In the following season, he tied tight end Hunter Henry for a team-leading 66 receptions. However, in his first season in Josh McDaniels' offense, Douglas saw fewer snaps out of the slot compared to the two previous years.
“The Patriots featured Stefon Diggs and Henry in that spot. New England signed Romeo Doubs, who, like Diggs, can line up inside. In a contract year, Douglas could be the odd man out of the Patriots' receiver rotation, especially if the club acquires A.J. Brown from the Philadelphia Eagles.”
The Patriots selected Douglas in the sixth round of the 2023 NFL Draft, and he’s been a solid receiver for New England. Yet, with the addition of Doubs and potentially Brown, there may not be room for Douglas.
Douglas recorded 31 receptions for 447 yards and three touchdowns last season. His best season was in 2024 when he had 66 receptions for 621 yards and three touchdowns.
