And a proud Maher was full of smiles at the final whistle.
“I'm absolutely delighted and it was a special feeling,” he said.
“Looking over at the fans and winning trophies is the most important thing and I’m so pleased.
“Going to penalties, I chose them because I wanted to take the pressure away from the players.
“There’s obviously lads that want to take one and I chose one or two just because I trusted their technique.
“If they’re going to miss it, then that’s on me that way.”
Southend scored four of their five penalties while Collin Andeng Ndi saved two of Wealdstone’s penalties to also earn praise from his manager.
“Collin did brilliantly at saving penalties,” said Maher.
“I did really think he’d save one or two he’s so agile across the goal.
“He’s done really well and so did those who took them and obviously Gussy (Scott-Morriss) scoring the winning one is fitting.”
Prior to the penalties, Blues had been held to a 0-0 draw by Gary Waddock’s side.
And Maher admitted it was a tough test.
“I thought we started ever so well and Cards (Harry Cardwell) has hit the post, “said Maher.
“I think the keeper’s saved it and then later into the game they’ve shown they’re a good side.
“We’ve seen that every time we’ve played them there’s not been a lot in it and it was a war of attrition.”
“Going to penalties, you can see everyone cramping up with it being a big pitch.
“We haven’t played for nearly two weeks, they’ve had the same but the lads kept going and found a way to win again.”
