The Pittsburgh Steelers arguably made the most important move of their offseason on Saturday night, locking in future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers for another season.
The move will give the Steelers the QB stability they desperately need going into the 2026-27 campaign. Beyond that? Who knows, but Pittsburgh deserves credit for ensuring it has the best possible chance to be competitive next year.
That said, Fansided’s Justin Carter believes that the Steelers may not be done making moves just yet. Specifically, Carter has a hunch that Pittsburgh could target a former Houston Texans superstar wide receiver after signing Rodgers.
“Right now, it appears the Steelers will enter the 2026 season with DK Metcalf, Michael Pittman Jr., and rookie Germie Bernard as the top receivers, with Roman Wilson, Ben Skowronek, and rookie Kaden Wetjen as the next three names on the roster,” Carter wrote Sunday.
“That's...an alright group of guys. Metcalf and Pittman as your top two receivers is lowkey strong, but I worry about the drop off right after. I'm high on Bernard long-term, but is he going to be the right guy for a win-now team in 2026?”
“This is where I'd at least try to add competition. I don't think you need to go out and sign Stefon Diggs or something, but would Deebo Samuel be an option to add some versatility to this offense? Or can you move Pittman into the slot and sign a veteran like DeAndre Hopkins or Keenan Allen? Or hey, even dipping down into the realm of guys like Sterling Shepard or Noah Brown shouldn't be out of the question.”
It isn’t difficult to determine why Hopkins is still a free agent in mid-May. Although the 33-year-old appeared in all 17 of the Baltimore Ravens’ regular-season contests last year, he totaled only 22 receptions for 330 yards and two touchdowns.
The season prior, Hopkins recorded 56 receptions for 610 yards and five touchdowns with the Tennessee Titans and Kansas City Chiefs.
Needless to say, the Clemson product is no longer the standout WR who flourished with the Texans and Arizona Cardinals earlier in his career. Still, the five-time Pro Bowler could be useful for the Steelers as a highly effective red zone threat (due to his strong hands) and a reliable target against zone defenses (due to his ability to regularly find the soft spots).
Hopkins would unquestionably be an interesting free agent for the Steelers to consider.
