Broncos Undrafted Rookie Spotlight: Gavin Ortega prepares to push for rotational spot

Despite it being one of the top strengths of the team, the Broncos added to their offensive line in the 2026 NFL Draft.

A fourth-round choice was used on Kage Casey out of Boise State and following the draft, the Broncos signed a pair of free-agent tackles who went undrafted. One of those was Weber State's Gavin Ortega.

Name: Gavin Ortega

Position: Tackle

School: Weber State

Height: 6-foor-5

Weight: 304

Though Ortega played at a school in Weber State that gets little attention nationally, there were some draft analysts who felt he could be selected before the draft concluded. Instead, the Broncos grabbed him as a priority free agent.

Ortega will bring good experience with him from college, having made 35 starts at both left and right tackle. He has good athletic ability and his tape shows good fundamentals, particularly with his hand placement. He doesn't possess tremendous size or Herculean strength and may project best as a guard at the next level.

At just 22 years old, he has plenty of time to develop and become a regular rotational lineman a team could turn to in the case of injury or a player struggling.

Chances of making final 53-man roster (1-10 scale): 2

The Broncos are deep along the offensive line and their starting five is basically already known in May. Given that, it will be difficult for any undrafted player to crack this roster, as Frank Crum, Alex Palczewski, Alex Forsyth and Matt Peart are all experienced in this offense and terrific options as reserves.

Unless one of those players goes down with an injury, gets traded, or is a surprise cut, Ortega is looking at playing for a spot on the practice squad. However, that is doable and probably likely given the current construction of this roster.

There is enough there to warrant an extended look and a chance to become a key piece for the future. A year on the practice squad would serve a young player like Ortega quite well.
