With a whole lot of good so far this offseason, Brent Sobleski of Bleacher Report gave the Browns a solid “B” grade with an interesting statement to end his first sentence describing Cleveland’s offseason:
Once again, the Cleveland Browns pieced together what looks like an outstanding offseason, while simultaneously not accomplishing what really needs to be done.
At the end of his write-up on the Browns offseason, Sobleski seems to indicate what he meant by “not accomplishing what really needs to be done,” when he noted concerns around hiring Monken and the never-ending need for a quarterback. (Full disclosure: Brent is a friend of mine, so I reached out to him on social media, instead of texting, late Sunday night to seek clarity if I was correct in my assumption here.)
The Monken hire deserves a bit of caution, given that no other team has ever chosen to hire him as a head coach at the NFL level. The quarterback position could have seen other options added (Kyler Murray, Malik Willis, or Kirk Cousins in free agency, Geno Smith in a trade, or Ty Simpson early in the NFL draft), but none of those have any more long-term certainty than Deshaun Watson or Shedeur Sanders**.**
What do you think of Sobleski’s grade and concerns related to Monken and the QB position?
