Colts predicted to sign $17.5 million free agent to help Daniel Jones

The Indianapolis Colts were having a brilliant 2025 NFL season until things went down the drain.

They're hoping to put together a complete campaign in 2026. A lot will depend on the health of Daniel Jones, but they could also continue adding to their roster in the hopes of maximizing the talent they already have on hand.

With that in mind, ESPN's Matt Bowen has noted the Colts as the best landing spot for one remaining free agent: Deebo Samuel.

Samuel is the talented, multi-threat wideout who spent the 2025 season on a $17.5 million contract with the Washington Commanders.

He's one of the most surprising remaining free agents, because his skillset seems like it could fit in a variety of offenses. He should be capable of helping contenders win football games, but maybe he's asking for more than teams want to pay.

Regardless of the reason, the Colts could use him.

"The Colts added veteran receiver Nick Westbrook-Ikhine this offseason, but Samuel would bring a unique skill set to coach Shane Steichen's offense as a complement to Alec Pierce and slot man Josh Downs," Bowen writes. "Steichen can create a long runway for Samuel to get up to speed on crossers, while building in manufactured touches on screens and fly sweeps."

Good offenses are the ones with lots of weapons. Jonathan Taylor and Tyler Warren lead the way in that regard for Indy. Samuel would help add to that mix.

"Signing Samuel, who caught 72 passes last season in Washington, would also give quarterback Daniel Jones another catch-and-run target alongside tight end Tyler Warren," Bowen writes. "Both Samuel and Warren ranked in the top 15 of yards after the catch last season."

Jones thrived with the Colts because the players around him, and the offensive system, helped lift him up. They shouldn't stop adding to that group.
