Over the weekend, the Pittsburgh Steelers’ wait for Aaron Rodgers finally came to a close. The veteran was spotted in the city with some of his teammates, and shortly after it was reported he’d be returning to the team on a one-year deal. However, it doesn’t seem as if he’ll be hitting the field just yet.
“Aaron Rodgers is at the Steelers facility this morning to sign his contract. Not certain – and probably not likely – he will participate in the first day of OTAs,” Steelers insider Gerry Dulac wrote in a tweet posted Monday.

Monday is the first day of OTAs, which will run for a couple of weeks. Wednesday and Thursday will represent the second and third days, and OTAs will run through June 12, with 10 of them in total. Mixed in there are three days of mandatory minicamp during the first week of June.
It wouldn’t be too surprising if Rodgers missed some other days during OTAs as well. For someone who’s 42 and spent over two decades in the NFL, these offseason workouts really don’t mean as much. And Mike McCarthy even mentioned earlier this offseason that he certainly wouldn’t mind Rodgers not being on the field during OTAs.
Since he’s obviously going to be the starter, that doesn’t leave as much of a chance for the Steelers to evaluate the other quarterbacks in their building. Thus, McCarthy will get a chance to see both young ones on Monday. He already spent time with Will Howard earlier this offseason and started breaking down Drew Allar’s mechanics during the Steelers’ recent rookie minicamp. While it wouldn’t hurt to have Rodgers out there, the more time he misses during OTAs only gives the Steelers more of a chance to see what else they have in their QB room.
That said, it certainly would help to have Rodgers on the field sooner than later. Last year there were plenty of miscommunications with the receivers. And that position has a couple of new faces now. However, it doesn’t sound as if Rodgers will be on the field for Monday’s OTAs.
