There are only so many former No. 1 overall picks in the NFL at any given time.
Jadeveon Clowney remains one of them, and at the moment, he's a free agent.
Clowney isn't the player he once was, and he may never have fully lived up to being the player some thought he could be.
Still, he can make an impact as an edge rusher, both against the pass and the run. Someone will sign him by the time the season rolls around, and he'll probably still make an impact.
That team could be the Detroit Lions, which ESPN's Matt Bowen lists on Monday in a new article as the best fit for Clowney.
Detroit has been looking for help for Aidan Hutchinson for a few seasons now, and while Clowney wouldn't solve everything, he certainly wouldn't hurt.
"Detroit drafted edge rusher Derrick Moore in the second round to play opposite Aidan Hutchinson on pass-rushing downs, but Clowney would provide more depth up front," Bowen wrote. "He had 8.5 sacks and 32 pressures last season in 13 games for the Cowboys, winning late in the down to get to the quarterback. Clowney would provide rotational value for coordinator Kelvin Sheppard's unit."
Clowney's 2025 season was particularly encouraging. His few years before that showed solid pressure stats but very few stats to align with that.
By actually getting the QB to the ground a bunch with the Cowboys, Clowney showed that he's still got it.
Now 33 years old, Clowney probably isn't going to add to his list of three Pro Bowls. But can he help the Lions win football games? You'd certainly think so.
