Chelsea approached to sign Victor Osimhen this summer

How many years has the Victor Osimhen to Chelsea saga gone on for? It definitely goes back to his time at Napoli, when he was first establishing himself as one of the brightest strikers in European football. The Nigerian international was believed to hold a soft spot for the Blues as well, which could help facilitate a move.

Yet, for all the rumours and speculation, it never happened. In fact, no top European club ended up signing Osimhen when he left Napoli, despite his elite goalscoring record for the Italian side.

He managed 76 goals in 133 games for Napoli. And despite being linked with the likes of Chelsea and Real Madrid, he eventually ended up joining Galatasaray, where he had spent the previous season on loan. His camp might already be eyeing his next move.

According to Graeme Bailey, Osimhen’s representatives and intermediaries are once again actively exploring opportunities across Europe. Chelsea are one of those approached as they prepare for the arrival of Xabi Alonso.

Should Chelsea sign Osimhen this summer?

Chelsea do have a very good striker right now in Joao Pedro. That being said, you can see the lack of goals in recent weeks. The Blues have failed to score more often than not. And it is hard to remember the last time they managed more than one goal in a top-level game.

So, Chelsea could do with another outlet for consistent goals. And Osimhen does find the back of the net on a consistent basis, wherever he goes.

Many might point out that Osimhen is no longer playing at the highest level. But then, let’s not overlook the fact that he scored seven goals and provided three assists in the Champions League this season. He remains good enough for the top club competition in world football.

How can Chelsea sign Osimhen?

One issue for Chelsea is that they will need to work under financial constraints. They were handed a ban by UEFA not too long ago.

So, if they want to sign someone like Osimhen, that would likely come with the departure of other strikers. Fortunately, the Blues do have quite a few on their books who might not have a future at Stamford Bridge.

Liam Delap, Marc Guiu and Nicolas Jackson could potentially leave

Liam Delap was signed last summer but simply has not impressed. Three goals is all he has managed since then and it might already be time to part ways. The club might still be able to recoup the transfer fee they paid for him.

Marc Guiu is another player who has not met expectations but he has not gotten a ton of chances either. A loan exit is more likely but if the right offer comes in, perhaps the Blues would consider a permanent one as well.

Nicolas Jackson’s situation is the trickiest. Everybody recognises his quality. And towards the end of his run at Bayern Munich, he has started scoring consistently as well. He should only be let go if there is a certainty that Osimhen or someone of that level will replace him.
