The Dallas Cowboys will be ready to make some noise this fall. Dallas had an excellent 2026 draft class that could help them compete for an NFC East title in 2026. One veteran free agent could be the final piece of their offense.
ESPN's Matt Bowen examined the free agent market in his latest article. He paired the top 14 free agents left with their best team fits.
Bowen argued that Dallas needs to add veteran running back Nick Chubb to pair with Javonte Williams in their backfield.
“A veteran grinder at this point of his career, Chubb could provide value as the Cowboys' No. 2 or No. 3 option behind starter Javonte Williams,” Bowen wrote. “Chubb can still secure catches on swings and checkdowns in the passing game, but he should be viewed as an early-down option who can use his power and vision in short-yardage situations. He rushed for 520 yards in Houston last season.”
The 30-year-old running back proved that he can still play during the 2025 season. He logged 122 carries for 506 rushing yards and three touchdowns, his best season since 2022.
Of course, Chubb's career took a turn for the worse in 2023 when he suffered a catastrophic knee injury that prematurely ended his season. It also put the rest of his career into jeopardy.

So would Chubb makes sense in Dallas?
It helps that the Cowboys have Williams as their established starting running back. If Dallas did sign Chubb, he would likely see a limited amount of carries when Williams needs rest. His workload would likely be smaller than it was in Houston last year.
Chubb could be an immediate upgrade over Malik Davis, Jaydon Blue, and Phil Mafah. He may only have one more season left in the tank, but he's still better than those reserve players.
It will be fascinating to see if Dallas actually does bring Chubb in for a workout this summer.
