The New Orleans Saints made a major splash when they signed running back Travis Etienne to a $48 million contract. However, it has now put fellow running back Alvin Kamara's status with the team in limbo.
Kamara has put on a show during his nine-year run with the Saints. But now, he looks like an afterthought in the team's running plans. General manager Mickey Loomis is still figuring out exactly what will happen with the running back, via Luke Johnson of the New Orleans Times-Picayune.
“We’re just trying to see how he’s gonna fit on our roster,” Loomis said. “Obviously there’s a resource management element. We’ll get to that over the next week or two.”

The running back's nine years in New Orleans has resulted in five Pro Bowls and the 2017 Offensive Rookie of the Year. Kamara has run for 7,250 yards and 61 touchdown while adding another 4,948 yards and 25 touchdowns through the air.
Looking at his 2025 numbers though, the running back wasn't nearly as productive. Kamara ran for 471 yards and a touchdown while gaining 186 scoreless yards through the air. While injuries did limit him to just 11 games, Kamara's role in the offense was dwindling even before Etienne's arrival.
The running back is now set to be a free agent after the 2026 season. New Orleans must resolve Kamara's immediate future with the team. If he does remain, head coach Kellen Moore will need to find a way to get both Kamara and Etienne into the gameplan. Whatever ends up happening, Loomis will play a heavy role in deciding the running back's immediate future.
