There are no substantive updates on the potential timeline of a new contract for receiver Chris Olave, but the two sides appear to be generally optimistic about something getting done.
The New Orleans Saints have historically used this period between the start of OTAs and the start of the regular season to reach new contract agreements with their star players. Former right tackle Ryan Ramczyk signed his extension on June 30, Michael Thomas signed his July 31, Pete Werner signed his on August 8 and Erik McCoy signed his on Sept. 8.
The start of the regular season brings about some urgency in discussions, General Manager Mickey Loomis said at the team's annual Hall of Fame golf event.
“I think that's just the natural course of things,” Loomis said. “Obviously we'd love to have something done sooner than that, and I'm sure Chris would as well, but we're not there yet.”
Olave is coming off his best season as a professional, earning second-team All Pro honors after recording career bests in receptions (100), receiving yards (1,163) and receiving touchdowns (9). He was on track to play all 17 games before a blood clot knocked him out of the regular season finale.
