Leeds United signed two strikers last summer ahead of their return to the Premier League. And, they’ve both been a resounding success.
When Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Lukas Nmecha arrived on free transfers, it’s fair to say supporters were concerned. Their injury records and the fact that they joined for free was worrying.
However, this gamble ultimately worked out, with the pair scoring a combined 19 Premier League goals this season.
Leeds United linked with move for Chelsea struggler Liam Delap this summer
Now, the 49ers could look to pluck another striker out of obscurity this summer from Chelsea. Hopefully, he can rediscover his form of old at Elland Road.
Because both Nmecha and Calvert-Lewin have been successful since their move to United, it’s easy to forget the poor seasons both had endured prior to their respective moves.
For Nmecha, he was coming off a season at Wolfsburg where he netted three league goals in 19 appearances. Meanwhile, Calvert-Lewin had also joined Leeds on the back of netting three Premier League goals in 26 appearances for Everton.
This summer, Leeds could potentially poach another out-of-form striker in Chelsea’s Liam Delap. The 49ers may be hoping that he can revive his career at Elland Road.
According to reports from journalist Simon Phillips, as relayed in TEAMtalk, Leeds have made contact with Chelsea over a move for Delap this summer.
The West London outfit are said to ideally want to reclaim the £30million they paid for the Englishman just last summer. But, Chelsea are also said to be open to a potential loan-to-buy deal for the forward.
Whilst these claims were from Phillips, TEAMtalk stated that from their end, their sources are yet to confirm whether United hold genuine interest in the 23-year-old at this stage.
Daniel Farke could help Liam Delap get back to his best at Leeds United
It is concerning that we’re linked with a striker who’s scored one Premier League goal in 1032 total minutes this season. However, if Daniel Farke can work his magic on another striker and get Delap back to his best, then we could potentially have secured an incredible deal.
Delap has struggled as of late, which is similar to the positions Nmecha and Calvert-Lewin had found themselves in before joining the Whites. Although, the 23-year-old has proven he can produce the goods in the Premier League.
Just last season, before his move to Chelsea, Delap netted 12 Premier League goals for a poor Ipswich side who were ultimately relegated.
His move to Chelsea hasn’t worked out, at such a young age. But, Delap has plenty of time to turn his career around. And, a move to Elland Road could be the thing he needs to get back to his best.
The Englishman would provide excellent competition for Calvert-Lewin and add tremendous squad depth to Farke’s side.
Given our current position as a club, if Delap were at his best, we would likely be priced out of a move for him. So, we must take a gamble on a player we know is talented when his stock is lower.
This is what we did with Calvert-Lewin, and it worked a treat. Hopefully, we can repeat that same trick with Delap.
