Cowboys and Packers named possible landing spots for Alvin Kamara amid uncertain Saints future

Running back Alvin Kamara's future with the New Orleans Saints has been a hot topic of discussion for most of the offseason.

With the Saints signing Travis Etienne to a lucrative four-year contract in free agency to serve as the new starting running back, questions have arisen about whether Kamara will be on the roster in 2026. New Orleans also has Devin Neal and Kendre Miller in the backfield, who are solid depth pieces.

Though Kamara has already stated that he wants to remain with the Saints for the upcoming campaign, general manager Mickey Loomis finally broke his silence on the five-time Pro Bowl running back's standing in New Orleans.

Loomis noncommittal on Kamara's future with Saints

On Monday, Loomis stated that the team is still trying to figure out how Kamara fits on the roster, meaning there's a chance the veteran back is on a new team in 2026.

"We’re just trying to see how he’s gonna fit on our roster. Obviously, there’s a resource management element. We’ll get to that over the next week or two," Loomis said via Luke Johnson of The New Orleans Times-Picayune.

A running back duo of Etienne and Kamara would be electric for the Saints. Though Kamara has been slowing down in recent years, he's still a savvy and experienced player who can contribute in the receiving game.

However, Kamara is set to carry a $10.5 million cap hit this season, and if New Orleans trades him after June 1, the team would save $3.3 million.

The Saints may not want to keep an aging, backup running back on their roster for that sizeable cap hit, so they could look to cut ties this summer.

Cowboys and Packers named possible landing spots for Kamara

As for where Kamara could land if the Saints decide to move on, Sportsnaut's Matt Johnson lists the Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay Packers as possible landing spots.

Dallas already has their starting running back situation figured out with Javonte Williams, but the depth behind him is below-average. The Cowboys are banking on Jaydon Blue establishing himself as a solid complement to Williams, with Malik Davis serving as insurance.

However, if Dallas wants to add another playmaker to the offense and take some pressure off Williams, Kamara would be a solid addition. The 30-year-old's dynamic receiving ability would be a perfect fit for the Cowboys' Air Raid offense.

Green Bay also has its 2025 starting running back, Josh Jacobs, set to return in 2026, but the depth behind him is an injury-prone MarShawn Lloyd, Chris Brooks, and Pierre Strong Jr.

There isn't a better running back to pair with Jacobs than Kamara, as the power of Jacobs, combined with Kamara's receiving prowess, would create a versatile Packers running back group.

It's clear that Kamara wants to be a Saint this year, but if that doesn't end up happening, the Cowboys and Packers would be logical landing spots where he can compete for a title and still be an impact playmaker.
