Adding another defensive playmaker to their roster should be a priority for the Washington Commanders at this stage of the offseason.
The Commanders ranked 32nd in total yards allowed, 28th in passing defenses, and 30th in rushing defense a season ago, resulting in a lackluster 5-12 campaign. While one marquee signing won’t fix all of their issues on that side of the ball, it could help prevent them from finishing near the bottom of the league in every major defensive statistical category.
Specifically, ESPN’s Matt Bowen suggested that a former Dallas Cowboys 11-interception star and two-time Pro Bowler should receive a look from the Commanders.
“Washington could view (Trevon) Diggs as a reclamation project, helping him get back to being a true playmaker in the secondary,” Bowen wrote Monday. “He has had 20 interceptions in six NFL seasons, including a league high of 11 in 2021.”
“Under new coordinator Daronte Jones, Diggs can use his man coverage traits and backfield vision to get a jump on the ball in the Commanders' pressure-heavy scheme. However, he has plenty of availability concerns after spending at least a portion of the past three seasons on injured reserve.”
There’s a concrete reason why many believe Diggs’ breakout season with the Commanders in 2021-22 was a fluke. The Alabama product has recorded only six interceptions since then and is now viewed as an undisciplined cornerback who relies heavily on his instincts rather than a sound, technical approach (which puts him in a blender more often than not).
It also doesn’t help that Diggs has only appeared in 22 contests from 2022-25 due to injuries. Still, who’s to say the former second-round pick couldn’t resurrect his career with the Commanders and prove he can be a dependable ballhawk moving forward?
Diggs would be an intriguing addition to a Washington squad in need of all the defensive help they could get.
