Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier told Newsmax Monday that the NFL's diversity, equity, and inclusion hiring practices are illegal in his state.
"I think anybody that tries to tell you the NFL is a racist organization is full of baloney," Uthmeier said on "Finnerty."
"It's a super majority minority organization. When you look at everybody on the field here in Florida, we're going to enforce the law," he continued.
"We're not going to allow discriminatory treatment in hiring and advancement. We don't do the DEI down here," Uthmeier said.
"The NFL has long required interview rules, advancement, hiring based on your race, based on the color of one's skin. This is not just insulting, but it is unlawful under our civil rights laws."
Since Florida began investigating the NFL, the league has softened some diversity-related hiring initiatives for assistant coaching positions but has not rolled back the Rooney Rule, which requires teams to interview minority candidates for head coaching jobs.
"That's not what the fans want. We don't have requirements that quarterbacks or running backs be of a certain color," Uthmeier said.
"Fans want players that perform well, that score touchdowns, that win based on performance, not based on the color of their skin," he continued.
"How many coaching candidates have been hired or turned away based on the color of their skin? We will get that information in short order," Uthmeier added.
"And where we see continued discrimination, I don't care how big of a company or how powerful you are, we will bring a civil rights enforcement action. We will enforce the law."
