Jamie Carragher is likely unhappy that Xabi Alonso will be in charge of Chelsea rather than Liverpool next season, however has admitted he has already wished the Spaniard well ahead of his new job.
The Blues will be hoping they have hired the ‘perfect’ candidate to replace Calum McFarlane from his interim duties at the end of the season.
Gary Lineker admitted he was surprised Chelsea were able to attract Alonso to the club, with many believing he was bound for a move to Anfield.

However, Liverpool’s ambition to stick by Arne Slot, and Alonso’s desire to live in London, helped make his mind up and take over at Stamford Bridge from next season.
The Spaniard’s former teammate Jamie Carragher told Sky Sports that he had been in contact with Alonso after news broke that he was going to take over in West London.

He said he wished him luck, and was looking forward to analysing how Chelsea got on in the 2026/27 season.
He said: “It’s probably the first time ever I hope Chelsea do well because my mate is involved, I haven’t had that before, so fingers crossed they do well next season, I told him good luck and I’m sure they’ll feature heavily on our MNF coverage next season”
The system Chelsea play in under Alonso will be interesting to see, although it has already been claimed that he will not be rigid with his approach having previously favoured a back three from his time at Bayer Leverkusen.
What would you go with for the Spurs game? A back three or back four?

Chelsea players look to impress Alonso
While Champions League qualification now looks impossible for the Blues this season, the players have a new reason to step up for the last two games of the season.
There have been attempts for Chelsea to get Alonso in attendance at Stamford Bridge for the final home game of the season against Tottenham.
Even if he is not present, the players will be aware he is watching, and looking to make an impact and stand out.
A draw would see Spurs virtually secure their place in the Premier League, something anyone associated with Chelsea would not like to happen in their home stadium.
