Former West Brom playmaker front runner to land Man City job

The former Albion fan favourite was last in charge at Chelsea earlier in the season.

Former West Brom playmaker Enzo Maresca has long been tipped as the man who will replace Pep Guardiola when he stands down as Man City boss.

The ex-Barcelona midfielder and manager’s trophy laden decade in charge of the Manchester club is set to come to an end - with reports emerging on Monday evening that the club is preparing for his exit.

He remains under contract for next season - but it has been claimed that the club are preparing for his departure after Sunday’s final game of the season against Aston Villa.

And former Albion playmaker Maresca, who became a fan favourite during his two years at The Hawthorns in the late 1990s, is the front runner to replace him.

Maresca, who scored five goals in 47 games for Albion, started his coaching career off at City in the academy - before going off to become a manager at Parma.

That spell was short lived and he returned to City and joined Guardiola’s backroom staff - before returning to England to join Leicester.

The former playmaker, who was Albion’s record sale back in 2000 when he was sold to Juventus for £4.3m, won the Championship title with the Foxes, before departing for Chelsea.

At Stamford Bridge he won the UEFA Conference League as well as the Club World Cup, before he left the club earlier this year.

Every time Guardiola, who has won 17 major trophies at City, has been linked with a departure from the club, it has been Maresca’s name touted as the replacement.

It comes after Maresca’s departure from Chelsea was marred by talk of the Italian already being contacted by City last year about potentially replacing Guardiola.

According to some reports, terms are already in place for him to return to City, having attracted interest from a host of clubs across Europe.
