Pep Guardiola tipped for new job instantly after Man City exit revealed

With Pep Guardiola's exit from Manchester City all but confirmed, attention now shifts to where he will land next.

The legendary manager is set to be out of work for the first time in a decade, having joined City in July 2016.

It will also be his second break since he began his coaching career, having enjoyed a year off between leaving Barcelona in June 2012 and starting at Bayern Munich in June 2013.

Although Guardiola could walk into just about any job in the world such is his managerial acumen, Spanish football expert Terry Gibson can't see the 55-year-old making an immediate return to LaLiga.

LaLiga is off the table for Guardiola

Gibson pointed out Barcelona boss Hansi Flick penned a new deal fresh off winning the league title and Guardiola wouldn't dare to cross the great divide and join Real Madrid, where Jose Mourinho appears poised to take over.

But Gibson didn't rule out Guardiola entering the uncharted waters of international management.

"There's nowhere to go to, that's the problem," Gibson said on talkSPORT's Sports Bar.

"Hansi Flick's just signed a new deal and he's won two league titles on the trot. He's signed a new deal until 2028 with an extension until 2029. He's said that's going to be his last job in football.

"Pep's never going to manage Real Madrid. There's nowhere else in Spain. I couldn't imagine him at Atletico Madrid.

"The only team I can see him possibly doing would be the national team one day. Or, a return at the right time to Barcelona."

Luis de la Fuente is the incumbent Spain boss and has been in the post since December 2022.

The 64-year-old's appointment as Spain manager was his first in senior football since an 11-game stint at Alaves in 2011.

However, the fact De la Fuente led a generation of Spanish stars while working as coach of their Under-19, Under-21 and Under-23 teams between 2013 and 2022 meant a progression up to the senior national team was a natural move.

To date, it's proved a wise appointment as De la Fuente led Spain to glory at Euro 2024, the nation's first major trophy in over a decade.

However, failure to win the 2026 World Cup coupled with Guardiola's impending availability could leave De la Fuente's position on shaky ground.

Guardiola's previous close call with career first

Gibson pairing Guardiola with the Spain job is not the first time he's been linked with an international role.

South American football expert Tim Vickey spoke on the Sports Bar of how Guardiola, fresh off his four-year spell in charge of Barcelona, could have been lured out of his sabbatical for 'only one job': Brazil.

"He was linked to it at the end of 2012," Vickery said.

"He was taking time out, he was living in New York and he said there's only one job that would give him an incentive to come out of his little break, and that would be the Brazil job.

"They rushed to appoint Luiz Felipe Scolari to try and head him off then."

Similarly to the Spain role, Guardiola would have to wait for the Brazil gig to open up as Carlo Ancelotti is in charge.

But, unlike De la Fuente at Spain, Ancelotti, who had never managed at international level prior to his appointment last May, appears to be with Brazil for the long haul.

"Ancelotti, he's very shrewd," Vickery said.

"He likes it, he's enjoying himself. So before the World Cup, he's made sure he's signed up for another four years.

"Obviously, every coach is really a stand-in coach. You mever know, he could get sacked before then.

"But as it stands, Ancelotti is booked in for bed and breakfast until 2030."
