Tuchel told to consider star who has played 225 minutes for World Cup squad

Levi Colwill has just returned from injury, but will Thomas Tuchel give him a ticket to the World Cup with England?

This is a question that was asked by Jason Cundy on Inside Chelsea for talkSPORT amid the centre-back's impressive return to form.

Ten days before their first match of the season, Chelsea broke the news that Colwill had surgery on an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

Players who sustain such injuries tend to be sidelined for months, and even entire campaigns while they recover.

Colwill was no different, but has managed to work his way back onto the pitch before the end of the campaign in a big boost for Chelsea.

He came off the bench in the 3-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest, and then started in the backline for their 1-1 draw with Liverpool.

Interim head coach Calum McFarlane did the same in the 1-0 FA Cup final loss to Manchester City, with the 23-year-old putting in a shift.

World Cup wildcard

"A special mention for Levi Colwill who I thought, again, was top tier," ex-Blues defender Cundy said on the latest episode of Inside Chelsea.

England head coach Tuchel names his 26-man squad for the World Cup on Friday, and so Cundy raised the idea of Colwill being included.

"Does he go to the World Cup?" he tentatively asked, with host Olivia Buzaglo replying: "I don't know about that."

However, Cundy pointed to Colwill's form since his return and hinted that it might not be beyond the realm of possibility.

"Well that question, three weeks ago, wasn't even on anyone's lips so, well done him."

Could Colwill go to the World Cup?

Last week, The Athletic reported that Colwill was included in the 55-man provisional England squad for the World Cup.

This is despite him playing just 225 minutes of senior football in the 2025/26 campaign due to his injury.

However, his inclusion would suggest that Tuchel has been keeping a close eye on the defender.

He was also in attendance at Wembley Stadium for the FA Cup final, so will have taken note of his impressive display for Chelsea.

Colwill has earned five caps for the England national team, with one of those coming under Tuchel since his arrival in January 2025.

Should he be included in the World Cup squad, it would be a massive sign of trust from the head coach given his recent injury.

Which defenders are in line for a call-up?

Marc Guehi looks set to be named as the go-to starting centre-back for England, with Ezri Konsa potentially playing alongside him.

Harry Maguire could also earn a ticket to the World Cup having had an impressure upturn in form at Manchester United.

All three were named in the 35-man squad that Tuchel selected for the March international break.

Dan Burn, Jarell Quansah, John Stones and Fikayo Tomori were also involved as centre-back options.
