Sports director makes Arsenal call again – Player remains ‘interesting’ despite transfer difficulty

Borussia Dortmund sporting director Ole Book has been in touch with Arsenal about a potential move for Ethan Nwaneri this summer.

Sky Sports Germany report that the 19-year-old remains on Dortmund’s list after missing out on signing him last season.

Borussia Dortmund interest again

The website explains that Borussia Dortmund’s priority this summer is signing a creative, attacking player to replace Julian Brandt. Additionally, a playmaker in defensive midfield is expected to arrive at some point.

The German side believe they have funds to pursue these targets and Ole Book is ‘working intensively’ behind the scenes looking at potential new signings.

Arsenal’s Ethan Nwaneri is a player who has been on their list for some time. Dortmund missed out on him last year and are now making another attempt.

Book has enquired about the attacking midfielder’s situation with the Gunners. Dortmund still find the youngster ‘interesting’ after trying last year. At that point, Nwaneri instead extending his contract with the Gunners.

He then headed out on loan to Marseille earlier this year, but will return to the Emirates in the summer. The belief is that he is open to another move, including to Borussia Dortmund.

At this moment in time, a deal is unlikely. Arsenal have set a high asking price for a permanent exit and are making it difficult to arrange another loan deal. Nevertheless, he remains an interesting prospect for Dortmund this summer.

It may come down to what Ethan Nwaneri wants when he returns to Arsenal. He will surely hold discussions with Gunners and Mikel Arteta about his role in the squad moving forwards.

He was sent on loan to Marseille for game time and to develop further but has stagnated in France rather than flourished.

And with Arsenal likely to be Premier League champions and bolster their options this summer, it’s hard to see what role he could play moving forwards. That could open the door for Dortmund, who will surely lurk in the background and wait for their shot.
