Despite Erling Haaland’s late equaliser, Manchester City’s failure to defeat Bournemouth on Tuesday night handed Arsenal the 2025-26 Premier League title.
Arsenal clinched the Premier League title with a game to spare as Manchester City were held to a 1-1 draw by Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium.
City, whose long-serving manager Pep Guardiola was linked with an exit in the build-up to the game, knew anything but a victory would make Arsenal champions.
Three days on from lifting the FA Cup, City were second-best for long periods and fell behind to a lovely strike from Junior Kroupi late in the first half.
Bournemouth passed up multiple chances for a second goal, and Erling Haaland set up a dramatic finish by firing home via the post in the fifth minute of second-half stoppage time.
But City could not find a winner and while Arsenal can celebrate their first title in 22 years, Bournemouth are now sure of European qualification.
In a high-octane start, Jérémy Doku drew a good save from Djordje Petrovic, before the offside flag thwarted ex-Bournemouth star Antoine Semenyo, who had latched onto Haaland’s through-ball before finishing confidently.
At the other end, Evanilson somehow turned Marcus Tavernier’s centre over a completely gaping goal – albeit amid a suspicion of offside – though the Brazilian was then on hand to block Haaland’s drive after a scramble in the Bournemouth area.
And it was Bournemouth that went ahead six minutes before half-time, with Kroupi taking in a cutback from Adrien Truffert before curling a wonderful effort into the top-right corner.
Nico O’Reilly failed to beat Petrovic after a driving run from Haaland early in the second half, then Bournemouth missed a trio of chances to make it 2-0 – Evanilson worked Gianluigi Donnarumma and teed up Kroupi for a wayward effort, while Rayan struck the outside of the post.
Substitute David Brooks also hit the upright, as did Rodri for City, with Haaland lashing against the woodwork and in from the rebound of that latter chance.
But there was no time for a famous City winner, and the celebrations can now begin at Arsenal.

City’s Title Dreams Dashed
City’s preparations for a must-win game – against a team that had not lost in the Premier League since 3 January, no less – were not exactly ideal.
On Monday, midway through Arsenal’s nervy victory over Burnley that put the Gunners on the verge of the title, reports emerged suggesting Guardiola had decided to bring the curtain down on his 10-year City reign.
Guardiola did not speak on those rumours ahead of kick-off and said they had “absolutely zero” impact on City’s preparations.
Yet City were flat from the off and looked like their exploits as of late had finally caught up with them.
Guardiola’s most interesting personnel decision was to start with Rayan Cherki on the bench, as he did for the FA Cup final victory over Chelsea, but he was introduced alongside Phil Foden and Savinho 11 minutes into the second half, with City needing to go for broke.
And those changes did not inject the required intensity into City’s play, as Bournemouth’s effervescent energy both in and out of possession allowed them to control the contest.
Haaland’s goal was too little, too late for City, who have now failed to win the Premier League title in back-to-back seasons for the first time in the Guardiola era.
It remains to be seen whether that era will come to an end on Sunday, when City host Aston Villa in a game that could yet have ramifications for Bournemouth. If it does, the six-time Premier League champion will get a sensational send-off.

Sour Ending for Cherries Boss Iraola
Bournemouth were not only playing the role of potential kingmakers, as they only needed one win to secure a top-six finish and were hoping to remain on the coattails of fifth-placed Liverpool going into the final matchday.
They were also saying farewell to the most successful head coach in their Premier League history, with Andoni Iraola departing after Sunday’s trip to Nottingham Forest.
The Cherries more than played their part in an end-to-end opening, with Kroupi already having one shot blocked at source before Evanilson’s glaring miss.
Kroupi entered the game with 12 Premier League goals in 2025-26 – already the joint-most by a teenager in their debut campaign – and he took outright ownership of that record in style, bending a shot into the top-right corner after dropping off to receive Truffert’s pass.
It felt as though Bournemouth would come under huge pressure at the start of the second half, but after Petrovic’s save to deny O’Reilly, they started to push the visitors back, with their additional week of rest showing against City’s weary legs.
Rayan and Brooks were particularly unfortunate not to add a deserved second goal for Bournemouth, and though Haaland’s late goal does nothing for City, it could prove very important in the European race.
Bournemouth go into the final matchday not yet assured of sixth place and three points behind Liverpool in fifth, but they have qualified for Europe for the first time in their history – more testament to the job Iraola has done.
They will be hoping for a Villa win in Wednesday’s UEFA Europa League final, as that could open the door for sixth place to be enough for UEFA Champions League qualification, if Unai Emery’s team were then to lose at City, and Liverpool beat Brentford.
