Chelsea 2-1 Tottenham: Blues claim derby bragging rights to end winless league run

Goals either side of half-time from Enzo Fernandez and Andrey Santos ensured Chelsea picked up their first Premier League win since the start of March with a 2-1 victory over rivals Tottenham.

The West Londoners got off to the perfect start in the first half, opening the scoring 18 minutes in when Enzo Fernandez fired home on the edge of the area. The Argentine almost added a second, catching out Antonin Kinsky with a free-kick from a tight angle but his effort rattled the crossbar.

Midway through the second half, Chelsea doubled their lead as Fernandez set up Brazilian midfielder Andrey Santos in the middle of the penalty area, who slotted home from close range to score his first ever Premier League goal.

Despite falling two goals behind, Tottenham did not give in and managed to pull a goal back. A flick-on from Pape Matar Sarr fell to Richarlison at the backpost, who found the back of the net from close range to ensure a nervy ending.

However, Chelsea held on for all three points to move up to 8th in the table as they head to Sunderland on the final day. Meanwhile, for Tottenham, a point against Everton will be enough to confirm their Premier League status.

Story of the Match

Chelsea interim head coach Calum McFarlane made four changes from the FA Cup final as Joao Pedro, Levi Colwill and Malo Gusto missed out having picked up knocks on Saturday. In came Liam Delap, Josh Acheampong and Pedro Neto, whilst Reece James made way for Andrey Santos in the middle of the park. Meanwhile, for Tottenham, Roberto De Zerbi named an unchanged starting eleven from their 1-1 draw with Leeds.

The game got off to a cagey start as the away side came close to breaking the deadlock inside the opening ten minutes. Pedro Porro crossed the ball into the middle towards the towering Mathys Tel, whose header was saved by Robert Sanchez.

Moments later, however, and Chelsea began to grow into the game as Jorrel Hato laid the ball off to Cole Palmer, whose curling effort on the edge of the area drew a comfortable save from Antonin Kinsky.

But with 18 minutes on the clock, the home side took the lead. Palmer pushed forward down the right-hand channel before finding Neto, who picked out Enzo Fernandez on the edge of the area, as the Argentine rifled home from distance to put the Blues in front.

The West Londoners were very much in the groove and had an opportunity to double their advantage when Palmer latched onto Marc Cucurella's cross before setting up Delap, who fired miles off-target. Fernandez almost netted his second of the evening just shy of the half-hour mark, as an audacious free-kick crashed back off the crossbar.

Meanwhile, up the other end, Spurs looked to hit back as Tel found some space inside the Chelsea penalty area, but could only strike his effort high and wide. However, the home side were much the better side in the first half and could have made it two in stoppage time, but a low drive from Palmer whistled wide of the target.

Tottenham looked the more threatening at the start of the second half but did very little to trouble Sanchez in the Chelsea goal. Their opening effort on target came just shy of the hour mark from Richarlison, whose header was kept out by Sanchez.

But midway through the second half, the home side doubled their lead after Palmer capitalised on a defensive area before picking out Neto down the right-hand side. The Portuguese international delivered in a deep cross towards Fernandez at the backpost, who set up Andrey Santos on the edge of the six-yard box - the Brazilian making no mistake by slotting home.

However, with 16 minutes to go, the away side halved the deficit when Tel and Porro combined brilliantly, before Pape Matar Sarr flicked the ball into the path of Richarlison, who slotted home from close range to give Tottenham hope of a late comeback.

The visitors almost levelled proceedings with six minutes to go as substitute James Maddison found himself one-on-one with Sanchez, only for Hato to make a late defensive challenge to keep the score at 2-1.
