This was the second time in three years that the two rivals faced each other in the final, with Liverpool having previously defeated Everton 3-1 in the 1986 final to secure their first League and FA Cup double. In the 1989 final, Liverpool took an early lead with a goal from John Aldridge just four minutes into the match. Despite the triumph, the celebrations were subdued due to the recent Hillsborough tragedy, which had occurred only five weeks earlier.
