Newcastle United’s European hopes are finally over heading into the final game of the Premier League season.
While Chelsea’s win keeps their European hopes alive and keeps Spurs under threat of relegation heading into the final day, it also means Newcastle, Everton and Fulham can no longer secure a top-eight finish and Conference League qualification.
The top five clubs in the Premier League will qualify for next season’s Champions League. Sixth place will also qualify if Villa win the Europa League on Thursday night, lose to Manchester City and Liverpool beat Brentford on the final day.

Bournemouth currently sit sixth and can only be caught by Brighton so are already guaranteed some form of European football for the first time in the club’s history.
Brighton sit in a Europa League spot and could still drop out of the European places, with Chelsea, Brentford and Sunderland still able to catch them.
Chelsea’s win over Spurs moves them into the final European place which will qualify them for the Conference League. However, they must get a result against Sunderland in order to have a chance of keeping that place.
A win at the Stadium of Light would ensure they secure a European spot while the Black Cats know that doing the double over Chelsea would give them a chance of qualifying for Europe for the first time in the Premier League era.
While Newcastle could still technically catch Sunderland or Chelsea on the final day, they can’t catch both as they can’t both drop points. And because of that, they can no longer qualify for Europe this season.
