"He deserves": Erling Haaland on watching Martin Odegaard lift Premier League title

Manchester City striker Erling Haaland congratulated Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard after the Gunners clinched the Premier League title after 22 years.

Arsenal went five points clear of the Cityzens at the top of the league after a slender 1-0 win over Burnley at the Emirates Stadium.

Man City had to respond with a victory on Tuesday to stay in the title race, but fumbled with a 1-1 draw against Bournemouth away.

Speaking after the result, Haaland said that the Gunners deserve to win the league, having secured the most points in the 2025/26 season.

He also congratulated Norwegian and Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard, but had some mixed feelings over him lifting the trophy.

He told Viaplay: “When you get the most points, you deserve to win the league, so congrats to Martin [Ødegaard]. It’s well deserved.

“He deserves this trophy. It’ll be tough to see him lift the trophy, but it’s fantastic when a Norwegian lifts the Premier League trophy.”

Odegaard has had a tough season with the Gunners due to multiple injuries. He has still impressed with eight goal contributions from 1,371 league minutes.

The Norwegian has made seven assists in the top-flight season, with his latest coming in the dramatic 1-0 win over West Ham United at the London Stadium.

Against Burnley, the 27-year-old did not have a direct goal involvement, but he was heavily involved in the final third, providing several top-notch passes.

Odegaard seemed to be struggling with his knee towards the end and should receive a much-needed rest on Sunday before the Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain on May 30.

PSG are undoubtedly the favourites to win the elite European competition for a second year in a row, but Arsenal will feel they can spring a surprise if they stay defensively resolute in Budapest.

Les Parisiens beat Arsenal 3-1 on aggregate during the semi-final stage last season, but Leandro Trossard, Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka were all guilty of missing clear-cut scoring chances.

Gianluigi Donnarumma, now at Manchester City, had a brilliant second leg at Parc des Princes with crucial saves in the first 20 minutes. Arsenal could exploit PSG’s defensive vulnerability on the counter-attack.
