Over the last couple of months, there has been talk about Chelsea trying to sign proven Premier League names. That would be a shift away from their usual strategy of signing as many youngsters as possible, in hopes that some develop into quality senior players. But a change is exactly what the Blues need after four unsuccessful seasons under BlueCo. And there have been plenty of signs that is on the way.
The appointment of Xabi Alonso is the most obvious one. He has been brought in as ‘manager’. Not just that. That fact has been made abundantly clear in the media, almost as if the club want the supporters to know that they are changing their methods.
Hopefully, that change of approach will also be as clearly visible in the transfer market. And one of the players who the club have been linked with very recently is none other than Jarrod Bowen of West Ham United. A move would become even more likely if the Hammers get relegated, which is very possible.
According to Simon Phillips, Bowen is preparing to leave West Ham, but he wants to stay in London. Also, the journalist confirms that Chelsea’s interest is legit.
Why Jarrod Bowen could be an excellent signing
You simply need to look at Bowen’s numbers to figure out that he would be an excellent signing for Chelsea. Even this season, with West Ham likely to be relegated, he has 21 goal contributions to his name.
In fact, Bowen has made 21 goal contributions or more in each of the last five seasons. On two occasions, he has even gone past 30.
That is an excellent output for someone who has largely played on the wing. And at 29 years of age, he is very much in the middle of his prime and should be able to produce at this level for a few more years at the very least. A move from Chelsea, a team that has struggled in front of goal for a long time, should be a no-brainer.
Chelsea did help West Ham by defeating Tottenham 2-1
Chelsea did help West Ham’s chances of staying up by defeating Tottenham Hotspur at the Bridge on Tuesday. The result means that it will come down to the final day of the campaign.
Tottenham needed just a point to secure their spot in the Premier League, realistically. Now, it is still possible that the Spurs will stay up. But at least, it makes things interesting and gives West Ham a chance going into the finally day of the season.
If West Ham do end up getting relegated, it will help Chelsea’s chances of signing Bowen though. Manchester United and Liverpool are believed to be interested in him as well. But obviously, those clubs are not based in London.
